My Score On Nibs!

Stompie

Recommended Posts

Went mooching in an antique sort of shop the other day.

Found 2 boxes and 5 packets of pen nibs. Good name brands, Hinks and Wells and C. Brandauer - and all apparently pre 1920.
So I asked to see them. Italic and pointed nibs.

£12 for the lot so I took them.

Over 250 nibs and for some of them you can normally pay £35 quid for 10 nibs alone, ebay price. Some of the others range from 85p to 2.35 each!

So, even if I got all 250 at 85p a nib, I would have paid over £215 if I could have found them on ebay!

A real good bargain so I am a happy chappy!

Great find.

If you weren't a dip pen user, you will be now. :)

:D I hardly use fountain pens at all, for some time now my preferred writing instrument is a dip pen. I even carry nibs and ink when I go sit in a coffee shop for an hour or two!

Maybe it is just the "new toy" effect, but I am becoming entranced by dip pens. It is fun to use, well except for having to clean the nib every so often. I get to play with flex writing w/o the cost of an expensive pen with a flex nib. Although I probably won't go as far as you do, going mobile with your dip pen. For me, the dip pens stays in the house, less hassle that way.

I have been nib shopping lately, and I would love to come into a nib haul like you found.

@mvarela

I KNOW.

I've been building up a stash of nibs. ;)

I cannot seem to start into a new hobby slowly. I think I have enough nibs to last me 15+ years, and I just started dip pens about a month ago. I have pointed, bowl and stubs. I am afraid that I will not like some of the nibs that I bought, primarily the pointed ones, as I am still learning to use them. The bowl and stubs are for general writing, and I like them.

:D mvarela, that is too funny! I think there are a lot of us like this.

ac12, hang in there. For years I struggled to write with a dip pen, that was before I found this forum and got some very good advice from folk like Caliken and Mickey and others. Now, the dip pen it is my implement of choice and the mapping nibs my favourite!

Yeah... I've got some 800 or so. Some of them are just ok, but some are truly awesome. I think people miss a lot by focusing only on the big Birmingham names. French nibs were truly awesome...

Quite likely... there are some deals that are too good to pass :D

I could not find any write up on the French nibs, so I had not considered them.

But I took a chance on a small lot of French nibs for a decent price, and they do seem to feel good. It is nice to find a new source of good nibs.

I just gotta get my "acquiring" habit under control.

Repeat...I have enough nibs....I have enough nibs....

I'm still waiting to get my oblique holder. Darn thing is on back-order. :( Seems that a small one man shop makes it.

So I have to just use the straight holder for now.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
