Received it in my inbox this morning. This statement gave me pause -

The participants agree that Pelikan will pass on their email addresses to the chosen “Hub Master” to make sure that he or she can organize the event

I'm sure there are other ways Pelikan could put groups in touch with one another, without disclosing email addresses.

Yes, I also received the email this morning, the direct link is www.pelikan.com/hubs At max'ing out at 25 people per hub, in some parts of the world that will be easy, others a little harder to reach.

It's good to see they are engaging in the more 'social' aspect of interacting with customers. Also when you sign up, they ask about contacting for future feedback, so that's interesting too.

If you are worried about the email aspect, its always good to have a separate email that isn't your 'primary' and used for marketing et al

I have the impression, hubs are mainly intended for kids and teenies ("sharing photos on facebook, instagram, twitter...").

Pelikan wants hubs in towns with more than 200,000 inhabitants, so nations(!) like Luxembourg are disqualified!

Likewise some federal states in germany (Saarland, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern)...

I live in germany and I like Pelikan since 1956, but I dont' want to drive hundreds of miles into a town with more than 200,000 inhabitants, me and my pens getting foolish photographed for social networks...

Yes, I had this email this morning. I shan't be following it up.

I did not read it as mainly for teens and children. We will see how it develops. Interesting concept though.

The town I live in has 8800 people, according to the last US Census figures. Pittsburgh itself is, IIRC, about 200,000; the metro area is 2 million, but they keep expanding what is considered the "metro area" (it now includes places like Cranberry Twp in Butler County, because that's one of the few communities in a 50 mile radius where the population isn't declining.

That being said, I started reading the link thinking it was some sort of sweepstakes to enter, then started reading the fine print. If someone *else* around here (Steel City Pens, that means yinz guys) wants to organize such a hub I'd maybe be interested. But I think the specified date is a Friday, and most people have jobs....

I hope it's not just for teens (though that's ok of course). I think it's great that Pelikan is organizing events like this and was excited to get the email, though it's tough luck if you're in a big city--can you imagine Montblanc doing something like this? and obviously it's a smart way of inspiring and keeping brand loyalty.

I agree. We will have to see what happens. I live in or near two large cities so distance would not be an issue.

A little over 600 souls (and falling) in my village. I could be the Hubmeister, but I may be the only one in town who thinks a Pelikan is a pen and not a bird.

2hr drive (when raffic is 'good') to Seattle or Portland (both qualifying cities) so doubt I'll be 'hub nobbing' as it were. No complaints though, I live rural by choice and wouldn't have it any other way.

I'd really appreciate Pelikan paying more attention to their products than putting in efforts to organize these events. Given their quality vs price, they have some work to do.

Their pens (and nibs) are what attracts people to their brand, first and foremost. The social factor exists only if users haven't abandoned their brand already.

Hmmm..

On the one hand great that they are trying to branch out and 'engage', however I rather doubt that pen lovers are the kind of people to be focussed on such groups and Facebook type

promotion?

Although perhaps a fun idea, I find it rather sad that with a city of 200,000 only 25 people are expected ('limited to') participate, which almost makes it a kind ultra-fringe experience...

But maybe we are just that ;-0)

It looks like Pelikan has selected the cities that are going to be the sites of the Hubs across the world. I threw my name in just because it looked interesting and it turns out that my city was indeed picked. I have not heard anything from Pelikan personally though. I guess I'll have to anxiously await news. No real suprise with the US cities that they picked. Here is the US list and I linked to the rest of the list above...

Just got the following e-mail from Pelikan....

Dear Pelikan fan,

Congratulations! Your city was chosen as a Pelikan Hub, and we are looking forward to seeing you on Friday, June 13th at 07.30PM local time. We have chosen a total of 70 hubs all over the world, some very small with only 3 people, some very large with up to 200!

The hub master for your city will contact you via e-mail with further details about the location. This will happen until May 25th at the latest! He/She will also tell you how many people have signed up in your city.

Very important! Please keep the address /name of the location to yourself and do not post it anywhere on the Internet, as we want to avoid that additional people join in and will end up being disappointed if there are no shiny green notebooks available for them.

Anything else that you’ll do during the evening will be in the hands of the hub master. We can’t wait to hear what you’ll all come up with! J

We would be delighted if you would post pictures of your evening with the hashtag #Pelikanhubs – so we can join in from all over the world!

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions: hubs (at) pelikan.com

Alas, but not unexpected:

Dear Pelikan fan,

Thank you so much for applying to join in our Pelikan Hubs project! Unfortunately, the other fans in your city did not sign up, therefore we weren’t able to choose your city as a Pelikan Hub.

However, if you wish to travel to the nearest Pelikan Hub in your area, check out our website (www.pelikan.com/hubs) , where you’ll find a list with all the final Hub city names. Then send an e-mail with your newly chosen city to hubs@pelikan.com. Please do so until tomorrow! We’re sorry that this is such a short timeframe, but we need your answer urgently in order to make sure that we can organize the shipping of the shiny green notebooks in time.

If you don’t have a chance to travel to one of the chosen hub cities, you can still join in the fun by following us on our Website (same link as above), Facebook, and Instagram. With the hashtag #Pelikanhubs, we’ll continuously post pictures throughout the evening.

We hope we’ll stay in touch in one way or another!

Whee. Looking at pens on Facebook. That'll be a change.

Just got the email from Pelikan yesterday -- so excited about this! I tend to think of myself as a pen enthusiast somewhat in isolation, but I'm looking forward to meeting and connecting with other Pelikan fans here in Philadelphia.

Bad news for me in the Philadelphia hub. The date is likely being moved to 6/14 due to a conflict in the hub master's schedule (don't ask me). The new date just doesnt work well for me which is a shame since I really wanted to check this out.

I got an email as well but sadly--as I was really looking forward to it--it turns out -i'll be out of town on that day. I even contemplated trying to go to the pelikan hub in the city I'll be traveling to but it's too complicated and probably impossible at this date...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
