Apparently I've Made Some Progress

Quick handwriting story to offer some encouragement to fellow learners.

I learned chancery italic last year, as an attempt to improve my *awful* scrawl. I was reasonably persistent in practice for the first few months, until I got to the stage where I could write slightly faster than a crawling speed, but since then I've not done much in the way of formal practicing. I try to use chancery whenever I write, but I still don't write a whole lot.

However, the other day I was sitting in an airplane having just boarded. I was in first class, so was already sitting and had pulled out my notebook to do some writing while everyone else was boarding. A few minutes later, the guy sitting next to me leaned over and said, "How the hell do you manage to write so good!?" I thanked him and explained that I had just tried learning from some books. A few minutes later, a voice above me said "Oh your calligraphy is so beautiful." I looked up to see a (beautiful) 20-something girl looking down at my book. I mumbled an embarrassed "thanks" and we both smiled.

Thing is, to my eyes, my writing is *thoroughly* mediocre. I still consider myself a rank beginner but sure, if I work with large letters, in my practice book, then fair enough I can see how a non-writer would be somewhat impressed. But my regular handwriting (sample page of my notebook attached) is just not, to me, worth commenting on, especially not when you've been exposed to writing of the likes of Caliken and so on -- or at least, so I thought. But, apparently I've made some progress. It seems that what to my eyes is mediocrity is, to handwriting muggles, somewhat pleasant to look at. And I guess that's kinda nice :-)

Looks pretty good.

Some advice I heard many years ago: When someone pays you a compliment just say thank you. Don't apologize, even when you know that you really did not do your job to the best of your ability. They didn't see or hear the mistakes.

Many of us are oblivious to the things we do well. After all, if we did them, how big a deal can it be?

Your writing there is pretty nice. You're doing fine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
