Southworth Cotton Business Papers - Quick Review

Recommended Posts

Here are two of Southworth's Business Papers, in 25% and 100% Cotton.

The 100% Cotton paper has a tooth to it, not unlike G. Lalo Vergé. Some like that kind of thing, but I do not. You definitely feel it as you write. But as you can see, the line quality is quite good.

The 25% Cotton is a lovely paper. Smooth textured without feeling glassy, the line quality is good and some shading can is evident: I will have to experiment more with some shading inks. I will be picking some of this one up.

Both papers are watermarked, with security code. Both are 24lb weight: showthrough/bleedthrough was zero.

Hope this is of some use.

I use Southworth for a lot of my letter writing. I'd rather use Crane, but it's harder to find. If anyone in the Minneapolis area knows a good source for Crane, let me know.

It is: I treated myself to a bottle after doing this.

Barnes and Noble sells Crane products in the DC area.

I just picked up some Crane in Minneapolis (actually Edina), but the only size in stock was half sheets. A little too small for me.

Hmmm, I have never seen Crane full sheets, even in fancy stationery shops. Perhaps Crown Mill or G Lalo?.

Check out Crane's web site. they sell directly there and sometimes the "Sale/Clearance stuff has some bargains.

Also, "etsy.com" sometimes has some good stuff available. Saw this on etsy earlier today - no affiliation -

Quality paper is such a pleasure to use.

So glad my little review of Southworth paper could help everyone find some Crane paper.

I've only looked at Crane from afar, but I did just buy two different Southworth products yesterday. I'm an extreme FP newbbie (barely two weeks old) but I was having problems with medium nibs until I changed my paper. I bought the Southworth resume paper 24lb 100%cotton in Ivory and the Southworth business paper 24lb 25%cotton in white with a linen finish. I like them both, but I think the 100% is a little better. There is a bit of a difference it seems on the scans from your Kaigelu pen favoring the 100% cotton. I know the medium nibs on my pens now give a clean tight line. The only thing I don't care for is the linen finish, but since I found it on clearance, I won't complain.

Thanks for the great review and effort.

My vote is for the 100% cotton.

It looks crisper and precise.

I have not tried this yet, so I guess I have something to look forward to!

Thanks again.

Since you started this thread, I bought a packet of Swarthmore 100% cotton stationery paper. I am finding this has a tooth as well. It was described as having a "wove" texture. It works well with my Parker Vacumatic fine point, but it too rough for my Sheaffer fine points or my pointed dip pens. How do you compare the Southworth 25% cotton to Clairefontaine, Rhodia or HP premium printer paper? How does Southworth describe the texture of the 25% cotton paper?

Glad it was of use :) If you like G. Lalo, you'll like the Southworth 100% paper. It's not my cup of tea, but I know why people like it.

The Southworth 25% is not as opaque as Clairefontaine, nor as glossy/glassy. Held up to light, it looks slightly mottled. But it's smooth, just not *too* smooth. The line quality is correspondingly not as sharp, but no feathering. Compared to HP 24lb Laserjet, it's the same weight but not as opaque, and I find the colours pop a little more than with the HP.

Looking at the Staples site, Southworth 25% cotton business paper is offered in "wove", "linen" and "laid" textures. I imagine you have the "wove" texture, which is smooth to the touch, but which can catch fine pointed pens. I have some paper in the "laid' texture, and it is obvious that there is a pattern in it. I will have to get a small packet of the Southworth 25% cotton wove paper and see how it compares to the Swathmore 100% cotton wove paper I have.

So glad my little review of Southworth paper could help everyone find some Crane paper.

I'm hoping this is tongue-in-cheek! One of the best features of good reviews is that they get people talking, in this case about the papers they love and the new ones they must try. I, for one, will be stopping in at Staples to pick up some of the Southworth 25% cotton. So, thanks!

A warning for the prospective users of this paper: look carefully, very carefully, at the nib sizes that were used in the photos. I suggest that a western F / japanese M is the minimum size needed. From experience I can tell that, due to the paper's texture, using a japanese F is a pretty painful experience and a japanese EF is completely out of question.

Great review! I'm glad to hear Staples carries this. It looks like really nice paper.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
