An Unexpected Montblanc(146 Or 149?)

Um...I was hibernating in my dormitory for the final examinations. Damn the PA testing drive me out and I was considering go to a MUJI shop to see if I can get a suitable pen case for my fountain pens. However, MUJI disappointed me. While me journey back, I passed by a pawnshop (it is just located in the MRT station, I am passing by the shop every week), but this time I noticed there is a montblanc in the showcase, then I got in and out with a montblanc (spent 340 Singapore dollars, around 270USD).

So, guys I need your help again. I not a big fan of montblanc (not a fan of its price), but I think it will be a 149 or 146, not sure. And I found there is none model indicated on the middle ring, is it normal?

Its around 147mm, less than 150mm.

On the nib it writes 4180 M 14K MONTBLANC 585

on the cap, there is a 9 digits series number and GERMANY, under the clip there is a "pix".

Sorry for the poor quality of these pictures, I only have my blackberry 9900 at hand (even my 8900 can take a better picture). Could you tell me more about this pen? Is it real? Is it a 149 or 146? Its date? I am interested in every information about this unexpected buddy.

At last, these are all my fountain pens at hand. Love them all!

Thanks in advance!

It looks like a EF nib have not inked yet, I washed it this afternoon and bath it with air now. The body looks perfect, but there is ink in it since has arrived pawnshop, what a pitty.

Yes, looks like a 146 to me. The 146 is a great pen, enjoy.

I heard that there should be the model number 146 engraved on the mid ring, However, on my pen there is only montblanc -(dot) meisterstuck-(dash) on it. Quite confused, could u tell me more about it?

Yes it looks like a modern 146 as it has brass piston threads and a modern feed.

They used to put 146 on the clip band, but they stopped doing that. I don't know when the changeover happened.

I also do not know the date of the change. My late 70's- early 80's 146 has the number on the cap band and my recent (post 2000) 146 does not.

Definitely a 146. Great find! You're going to love it.

Have you had a fountain pen before? I know it's a slightly rude question to ask... but just wondering!

Not at all. Before that I have had 3 pels (M400 white, M600 white and 400nn), a sheaffer (nos PFM III), a parker (nos 51) and a MB (144 classique). This was my second mont blanc.

It is a very reliable and lifetime pen. Be careful a 146 purchase leads to another, it is even far worse with 149s

Well 149 is far more chunky than that I can handle, whereas I am considering to own a Conway Stewart.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
