Drastic Repair On An L.e. Omas " Return To The Motherland"

Hi all !
Just finished the repair of an LE Omas "Return to the Motherland"

The pen arrived without the filling knob ( knob was completely shattered ), the piston lead screw was sheared off, piston housing end broke off, and the inner piston guiding key inside the barrel was sheared off.

According the owner Omas themselves had no spare parts and were unable to help .
After making sketches and analyzing the possible repair approaches, I decided to use the sturdy lead screw and the anti rotation part of a Pelikan 100N.
See the attached "before" and "after repair pictures with a drawing showing how I've repaired the pen.
The barrel being rather long, I needed to make a lead screw extension.
First I drilled the inner collar out of the barrel sand reamed the initial 8.8 mm barrel bore to 9.0mm.
Doing so I could also use a standard Pelikan piston seal.
These are very proven dependable parts, protected for overload with a slip coupling in the filling knob ( which i integrated in the design).
When the piston should get blocked- due to crusted ink , hence bad maintenance - the filling knob will slip and screw off instead of damaging the mechanism.
Logically one should stop screwing further when unscrewing the filling knob as soon one feels resistance in the movement (just as on a vintage Pelikan)
Note the HR filling knob is longer as the original one , but this the best I could in the given circumstances.
The red color of the filling knob is also not as bright as the section, but this was the best matching color I had in stock, and the owner had no problem with that
Hard rubber will also not shatter when f.e falling on the floor, which- given the weight of the "beast "- is a serious benefit.
The piston housing is made from high tech Peek material for the same reason, and screws in the existing barrel threads, locked with a counter nut
The anti rotation part of a Pelikan 100N housing was glued over a collar on the new Peek piston housing.
Note the complete piston unit comes out from the back now, but i expect one will not need to disassemble it for many years.
The piston stroke being 29mm, a royal ink intake of 1.8ml is the result.
As a friend suggested on a French forum,, we better name this pen "Return to the Motherland, back from the dead"
The owner is happy ,so am I !

Now here's a question to which I would love to know the answer:

If you had to use a fountain pen for that drafting sketch, which pen and nib would you use? Saibi-togi? Platinum UEF/Nakaya EEF? Custom-ground needle?

On the Hunt For:

1) Atelier Simoni ID Demonstrator Natural Rhodium (As if it existed.)

2) Moresi 2nd Limited Edition Delta Demonstrator

3) y.y. Pen Club #4 and #10

I would surely use one of my own designed and made Bulk fillers with a home ground titanium EF nib ..

What else would you expect from me?

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Hi,

I can't believe I didn't say anything about this earlier! It's quite a wonderful repair, and it seems quite creative.

It's an impressive repair, and the Pelikan piston Francis retrofitted is probably better than the original OMAS piston.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
