Ladies and Gentlemen of the Board,

If you check the right hand side of the window, you may well see something new appearing. Yes, promised a few months ago:

Advertising

indeed.

And what this all means to our visitors here, guests and members alike, is a bright future for our little fountain pen nut house on the digital prairie!

Enjoy!

Warm regards, Wim

Yes, I guess. I got one of the catalogues to go with the Auction announcement. Mouth-watering. And that is an understatement :D.

Whilst I appreciate advertising will help FPN keep running, it does mean the landing page now looks rather crowded, with the forum topics / summaries on the left hand side being a bit squished.

Would it be worth narrowing / moving the "recent post" column that's on the right, rather than squeezing the forum summary column?

The sidebar is actually fixed width, so there is nothing I can do about that, unfortunately. The only item flexible on the page is the forum index. Do note that the actual advert space is relatively narrow at 180 pixels. Even on mobile devices that is quite a small size.

I honestly think it is a matter of getting used to this new layout. Do check out the new version of the Library theme, however, as that makes viewing a lot nicer with a more even spread of columns.

Having said all this, it is possible to hide the standard sidebar: hover on the top right of it in the IP.Board (default) skin/theme, and a close button will appear. In the Library theme the button is instantly visible, it is the gold rounded small button with a double right arrow point, just above the sidebar on the right. When you hide the sidebar, you will actually have more space (90 pixels more) than you used to have for the forum index.

HTH, warm regards, Wim

Well, I'm not big on advertising, but I suppose things must move forward.

On the bright side, having the Library skin back is extremely nice.

This is good, except it doesn't stay that way, it reverts back every time I go into a forum and then back out to the main page again.

edit:  eh, it will stay as long as I don't use the back button on the browser.  Gotta retrain myself.

Once you have enabled it, and move on from there, it should remember the way you set it, unless you don't allow storage of cookies. This is typically one of the few things the site software uses cookies for: the settings for the board :).

Wim,

I know I am not a member of the board, but you know I am a strong supporter of advertising on FPN,

This note is to tell you I don't get the ads on Safari

http://s271.photobuc...html?sort=3&o=2

but I do get them on Firefox

http://s271.photobuc...html?sort=3&o=1

I hope this is a temporary situation and I am just bringing it to your attention.

I actually do get them in FF, IE7 to IE11, Chrome, Safari and Opera. These are the 5 browsers I use for testing.

Could you please try clearing your browser cache, temporary files, history and cookies in Safari? You may have to do this several times, because Safari is notoriously difficult in this respect.

Alternatively you may have to check/disable a few settings, incrementally change things.

Warm regards, Wim

Wim,

I am wrong as usual. I use ADBLOCK on Safari. But I have removed it for FPN. How is that for a believer!

Best,

Dick

I'm sorry but I don't understand your answer.
As english is not my native language maybe I have not explained myself correctly. What I meant is that, with the three column format (including the new advertising column), the other two columns are very crowded together. Reading is not very comfortable on a smaller screen like the iPad's.
So what I meant to ask is: Is there anyway to hide this new advertising column in the iPad?

Actually, it cannot be removed, that is what I tried to say.

You can, however, hide the normal or standard sidebar, the one that in effect now is the second column.

It is easiest to do in the new skin, as there is a clear, even if small, button to do this. With the default (blue and grey) skin, you need to hover over the top right of the standard sidebar, which provides a clickable button to hide it.

You could of course also simply turn the iPad 90 degrees to get a wider screen, something I did and do most of the time. It generally makes for nicer viewing of forums and forum topics.

The advert sidebar was deliberately kept quite narrow, it is only 180 pixels wide.

Warm regards, Wim

The forum index does look squished, especially the sub-forum name and description.

Is there a way to realign the no. of topics & replies and latest post info to give more space to the sub-forum name and description?

Would it make sense to have the ad the width of the page (horizontal) as opposed to the cramped middle section?

You've got lots of empty real estate on the right hand side with the current view.

Please may I suggest using the pinch to magnify feature which while not wholly satisfactory page by page, does allow navigation of the home screen. Wim is correct in that using the screen landscape is a better way to use the screen real estate. You could install a browser that allows ad blocking but I think that would run counter to the good intent here re the valuable revenue stream ads provide.
