Pen Boxes

I tried to hijack another thread by asking a question about boxes. It was agreed that maybe the question deserves its own topic.

So the question is, has anyone found a single pen box that they are really happy with?

I bought an assortment a while back and found all of them to be lacking. Most of them weren't deep enough and therefore the lid wouldn't close. Some were too big and the pen flopped around. I like the wooden boxes that Craft Supplies sells but I bought a few of them and found quite a bit of manufacturing variability.

I don't sell a lot of pens but when I do I like to include a decent box. Just seems classier than one of those plastic tubes. So anyway, just wondering if anyone has a recommendation.

Todd Nussbaum sends his Nussbaum pens in a leather sleeve instead of a box. I really like that. The sleeve actually helps me; I slip the sleeved pen into my pocket when it's not in use. I can't do much with a box but put it on a shelf.

We have received a swap pen or two from Australia and these boxes from Timberbits impress me. Big enough for the full size pens like the Emperor. Not something you'd put the inexpensive pens in though.

I like the leather sleeve but I sell a few pens at a local craft place and the sleeves don't work very well as part of a display. That's where I'm trying to come up with a decent box.

Richard's box is certainly nice but I don't want something where it will take me longer to make the box than it did to make the pen!

It's going to be much less time to make the box than the pen.

The box is cnc'd as is the inset decal. The decoration on the pens will be too, and will match the decoration on the inside of the box.

Richard

In looking at the picture, it was obvious that YOU have CNC capability. Unfortunately, that doesn't help ME! :D

BTW, that's a great looking box!

I send out my pens with sleeves as well. I find that people are not as interested in having their pens in a box now.

Richard: That is a REALLY nice box. :notworthy1: Makes me wish I had a CNC machine.

My machine is just a gantry based engraver/very light mill. I have a 4 axis '6040', but 3 axis ones with a working bed of 30cm x 20cm are available - like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Updated-CNC-3020T-Router-Engraver-Engraving-Drilling-Milling-Machine-UK-STOCK-/271282675086?pt=UK_BOI_Metalworking_Milling_Welding_Metalworking_Supplies_ET&hash=item3f29b51d8e - are not cheap, but not horrific prices either. If you take time to do the work slowly, they are quite effective. The biggest problem with them is the wiring, which is relatively easily solved by replacing it. The thing I find difficult is coming up with the ideas for what to make.

Richard

Contact a local woodworker in your area. I met a guy who makes amazing boxes and they're not expensive at all.

I was actually looking forward to seeing boxes you were starting to make. However the ones you show are also quite nice. What are you using to pad your boxes?

What veneer is that stand covered in? Or is it the actual wood grain showing in the picture?

I made a Japanese-style pen box with Japanese art on the top. It's super simple to make, completely protects the pen and looks gorgeous. I can't post photos at the moment, but I can email pics to someone if they wouldn't mind posting them?

Thanks,

Joe

PS Richard, very nice work. That's a gorgeous box.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
