Small Things Review

Recommended Posts

This is a notebook that I have not heard about yet, and I couldn't find any reviews of it. I stumbled across it while visiting Paper Presentation (a store in Manhattan) and I was charmed by the design and the cover. Since this is my first real notebook review, I wasn't entirely sure how to go about it. I came up with a few criteria that I thought were important, especially for a pocket notebook. The following will be a handwritten review and a transcript of said review:

Year: 2014

Month: March

Day: 23rd (Tuesday)

Hello! I found this little book at a store called Paper Presentation in Manhattan, NY. The design and ruling appealed to me, so I bought it on an impulse. This, my first entry, is going to be a fairly quick review of the notebook. This is my first notebook review!

Pocket Sized Criteria:

Durability: 5/10

Though I haven't had it for long, it feels durable enough. The cover is some textured cardstock that I like very much.

Aesthetic Appeal: 9/10

I very much like the appearance of this notebook. The ruling is just right, the off white cream colour appeals to me, and is easy on the eyes, and it is understated but lovely [sic].

Paper Quality: 7/10

[Muji Fountain Pen Fine: Minor feathering (Compare to Rhodia with no feathering)]

Japanese Fine Nib: 78G [Even less feathering, not noticeable really]

Flex nib: [No bleed through, a little show through, relatively minor feathering]

Pilot Parallel: [1.5mm: No show through; 2.4mm & 6.0mm: A little bit of show through where ink is heavy, no bleeding]

Inks used: Sheaffer Turquoise [Muji Pen, 6.0mm Parallel], Diamine Monaco Red [78G, 2.4mm Parallel], Private Reserve Shoreline Gold [Flex], Omas Red [1.5mm Parallel]

Overall: Would recommend

No bleedthrough, minor feathering, neat design, [fairly] durable.

Pen: Muji Fountain Pen [Aluminum Round]

Pens Used:

Thank you for reading, feel free to critique the review or ask questions. I plan on posting a little update once I get some of my Iron Gall inks. With any luck those won't feather at all. I really like this notebook, but the feathering is a minor nuisance for me. If you can't tolerate feathering in the slightest, this is not the notebook for you.

This looks great! I like carrying a combination of perforated and non-perforated notebooks this size. I'll have to search for these.

I'm sorry to say that the pages are not perforated. Those are just the margins but now it's been pointed out they do look perforated in the picture. They have 112 pages.

Nice review. I checked the website for Nava Design and they don't list the Small Things notebook. They have a multitude of other notebooks and products though.

Thanks! And yeah I think the notebook and a lot of Nava designs stuff is pretty neat and well made. This notebook started my pocket notebook binge!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
