That is an odd price. The nib is an adjustable #7, not that scarce. If if was a number #10 I might somehow understand a premium. Also, the pen is missing the tapered end. The base is in pretty good shape, but it has some cracks. I really don't know what happened there. I think you might be able to almost buy a regular pen with adjustable #10 nib for that price. I might miss something myself :yikes:

A war between a bidder with 4 purchases on Ebay and a bidder with none!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

The import charges ALONE to ship it into Canada: $268.81. Wouldn't pay that much for the pen itself!

Who knows what's going on with eBay these days. Everyone says "money-laundering" or that it's somebody having a laugh. Maybe so. Guess so. (Just wish they'd do it with Beanie Babies or hockey cards instead, and forget about the Writing Instruments category....)

I have several Doric desk sets better than that one that I'll sell for well under a fourth of that price. This is just ebay craziness.

Save the Wahls!

Wow... I'm curious, when do they start charging an import fee (ie: at what dollar value?) Or is it applied to everything coming into Canada?

I know here in the United States there's been several states that's been trying to push legislation on ebay to automatically charge sales tax to customers in their respective states. (even if the company/person selling isn't a resident of that state, basically wanting ebay to charge the fee and pass it on to the state).

I now refuse, no matter how much I like the item, to bid covered by eBay's Global Shipping Program: "If you don’t want to pay the import fees upfront then continue searching for similar products not shipped through the Global Shipping Program or that are shipped from within Canada. Depending on the price of the item, you still may have to pay import charges on international purchases when your item is delivered." Very seldom, Canada Customs have slapped me import charges and when they did, I get an official receipt for my payment. Neither Ebay nor Pitney Bowles gave me one on two occasions through this scheme. Just wondering if they really remit those charges to Revenue Canada?

This bidder has done this at least a couple other times recently. See this thread in the Esterbrook forum.

Wow! I thought I was accidentally re-reading a thread. Yes...the $8K Estie. A pair of Ebay trolls.

Yep, seems wild to me too. The only thing unusual is the tiered base. That is one Ive not seen before and I thinks Ive seen them all - not. Now even for 2 knowledgable, focused desk set collector to go ape for that price seems a little whacky, but you never know...The failed sale and realist is another issue too. Maybe the "morning after" sobriety set in?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
