An expensive way to buy, but a good way to try out a variety of new inks in several pens

Bureau Direct are offering 4 x 10ml bottles of any of the Herbin colours as a set at £13.95

http://www.bureaudirect.co.uk/j-herbin-tube-of-four-inks/p3793

You can have 4 x 30 ml bottles for EUR 19.50 and get 15% discount on that this week if you buy at La Couronne du Comte.... No affilliation, apart from being a happy customer...

Any dealers in U.S. that offer similar ways of trying ink? I am just starting to experiment with different inks and this would be perfect. Thank you

I'm the UK so not best person to advise but I know that Goulet Pens sells small samples, and possibly also Isellpens.com? I'm sure your compatriots will be able to advise.

I found the 4 for 3 offer but is there a code for the 15%?

Hello Marie,

That sounds like a tempting offer. I have J. Herbin's 1670 blue ink and I love both the ink and the bottle it is in.

There is a nice little story on how I got the bottle.

When I visited my hometown Breda (in the Netherlands) last year's february I bought a nice Parker Premier Fountain Pen at the local Fountain Pen store 'tschrijfgereitje" The owner let me choose a free bottle of Ink (very nice service). I chose a bottle of Parker Quink Blue Ink. Unfortunately the NIB on my Parker was/got a bit bended, this made it write very scratchy. When I went back to Breda (I come there 3 times a year), I took my FP to the store again. I could pick up my Parker the next day. Repaired and fully serviced.... Free of charge :)

Being satisfied with the service I bought a Pelikan M800 green striped Fountain Pen (advise do not do this to often because these category of fountain pens ruin your budget :) )

And again te shop keeper offered me a free bottle of ink.. (the J. Herbin)... Very nice service, they have a webshop too but I do not know if you get a free bottle of ink if you order in the webshop) www.tschrijfgereitje.nl

Back on topic J Herbin inks are very nice (though a bit dry in comparison wit D-A inks).... Do you have any suggestion on what colour?

I am curious to hear about your favorite J. Herbin Inks

Kind regards,

Peter :notworthy1:

What wonderful service! Quite unusual these days. Although it is noticeable that fountain pen sellers tend to score highly in the traditional "good service" stakes :) I myself especially rate Le Couronne du Comte - all their packages are so beautifully wrapped, quickly despatched and they are very responsive to any queries.

Re J Herbin inks the colour that stands out a mile for me is Eclat de Saphir. I love it. I'm also fond of Bleu Pervenche and Poussiere De Lune. All three perform well in the right pens.

Thanks to the information given to me in this thread, I placed an order with La Couronne du Comte but just in case anyone else wants to place an order I can advise that Poussière de Lune is currently out of stock and is expected in about 2 weeks.

I've not really seen anything in the US Aside from GouletPen's 2ml samples.

All the J.Herbin samples they offer at 1.25 per 2ml.

Hrm that they do, $4.75 each (most look sold out).

So Goulet for 0.62 per ml, or JetPen for 0.47 per ml. (Though a 30ml bottle from Goulet is 0.33 per ml, but you don't get free shipping over $25 like JetPen offers).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
