That's good news, Richard. I'm glad to hear your experiments have continued and that you're restarting production.☺

I have moulded about 160 blank finials from acrylic modified polyester dyed black. These are cylinders with a hole up the middle and a circular spigot at the end. 140 finial mouldings were acceptable. Now I need to wait until my workshop temperature is high enough to machine to length, taper and polish. Unfortunately I have discovered that they are too brittle to machine if my workshop temp is below 8C.

I was hoping to have them machined up by Christmas, but they take over a week to cure to full strength - something I'd not factored in, and then winter caught up with us. I have 25 moulds, and the resin needs to be in the mould for 24 hrs, though 48 is better. Also the moulds need washing after each use and 24 hrs gives a good drying period. So in theory, I can mould 50 a week - but my wife isn't too happy about the resin smell. And she claims the moulds stink. I can't smell anything and always wear a P3 (toxic fume) mask when dealing with the uncured resins.

Regards,

Richard

Today, while Scotland was being battered by 100mph winds, the south of England was enjoying temperatures of 12C, so I was able to machine all the finials I have moulded. And was surprised at how many I have actually moulded.

48 polyurethane finials that won't polish.

50 that failed due to bubbles in the wrong places or cracked during machining and...

150 that accepted a taper without disintegrating.

These are all shown in the photo below. In the yogurt pot top left are the polyurethane finials, in the dish on the left are the failed ones. The other two dishes contain the 150 tapered ones. I have changed the method of machining for the finials and need to make some more tooling - the cold has returned before I can machine them to length and will have to take another approach. Anyway, am making progress:

Polishing will remove the dusty grey finish on the tapered finials.

Regards,

Richard

12C is not a temperature, it verges upon an offence against nature.

If you want some warm, we can lend you some. We have had more than enough lately to share. A week ago, southern Australia was the hottest place on the planet.

The other day I watched a film from 1961 that had been re-mastered by the British Film Archives, called "The Day the Earth Caught Fire". Watch it. It may make your toes feel all comfy and toasty...

I will say that for winter, it's unusually warm here. It isn't often that temps above 8C occur in January.

As for toasty... No thanks. I am a creature who prefers Ice & Snow to heat. 25C is the limit I can stand. It's why we visited Cairns (QLD) in August.

Regards,

Richard.

Good timing. A few weeks later the beginning of the wet season arrives. Temperatures go up to about 30C, humidity goes up to 90%, and the wind stops. You walk around in your own personal sauna, until the true wet season arrives sometime in November/December. I have seen it rain so hard that you couldn't see the houses on the other side of the road from your side. And it was a narrow road.

In the 1950's the British Museum organised a collecting expedition to the then British Solomon Islands Protectorate (think Guadalcanal). The day after they arrived, the wet season did. For the whole three weeks of the expedition, the only person who caught anything was the mycologist...

You should come and visit Sydney in winter. You can stand with me on Campbelltown Station at 6am, with the temperature hovering around 0C, the humidity around 10% and the wind coming straight off the Antarctic. The wind doesn't just bite. It gnaws and chomps and spits what's left of you out.

Basically, you can have whatever climate you like in Aus. You just need to move north, south, inland or coastwards to find the weather you like.

Please send some of that over here and I will exchange it for the hard packed snow that squeaks when you walk on it. It was -37C overnight a couple days ago, so there is no danger of the Earth catching fire.

The weather changed last night. Earlier today I was in the middle of a rain event that was 500 km in each direction.

The plants are happy but the cat is Not Amused.

In Florence Today 12 ° for this period is correct, in Northern Italy the temperatures are 10 degrees and 15 to the south, there is a worsening within two days, so let's enjoy the last few days :) . Cairns? Then you've visited the reef, very beautiful as throughout Queensland, compliments for the work i see great things, soon we can buy the pieces?

It has changed here too. It has warmed up enough for snow to fall. I will exchange you one small blizzard for enough rain to wash my driveway clean, so that I can get out this afternoon. My cat does not care, she is asleep on my chair.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
