Finally Parker 61- My Dream Pen

Hi Friends,

Ever Since I started read the history of Hero 336, I always wanted to use Parker 61 the Original version of the concept. But for almost 2 years I never had an opportunity for the same since it was so expensive.

Finally I won a Bidding today in Ebay & purchased the same. It will be shipped from Lisbon- Portugal & I cant resist myself using it.

The total cost came to 70.40 USD inclusive of Shipping charges. I hope its a good deal for a Mint+ product as they mentioned.

Below is the link for the product. Could you kindly check if it was worth paying 70 USD for the same.

I think that's a good buy. I often was outbid on 61s until I managed to get one from the UK that has a "medium" nib that writes like a broad nib. Capillary filler. Works perfectly. I like mine and I think you did well with that purchase.

Actually I was lucky I guess. Previously I have had so many situations like this. But this time it was lcuk. In fact I quoted the Bid amount for 67.50 $ excluding shipping charges. But when I won I was so surprised that I got for just 61 $ +9.40 $ for shipping.

I was in constant monitoring for the bidding notification. even far last final seconds.

Now I am sooo excited & also bit worried how the real pen will be. Praying that it should be as shown in the pis.

It was around the price I'd expect to pay for a reasonable one.

I still think the P61 is even better than the P51. However, my only P61 capillary filler is rather demanding compared to the rest. It needs to be used very regularly to prevent solids building up under the hood by means of the nib drying out. It is the only pen I can use with the nib higher than the body of the pen, though. This is useful if writing while in bed.

Good luck with it, and I wish you well.

Regards,

Richard.

you might want to ask the seller for better way to ship, considering how much you like the pen.

in 10 dollars shipping, you would get letter mail i.e pen would be mailed as a letter in an envelope ...and they have a tendency to get lost. i think it would take 13 dollars more to get it registered(to be on the safer side). i am not sure and hence suggest that you ask the seller how the pen would be shipped, and about better ways of shipping.

I guess the most popular thing nowadays on ebay is quoting the customs declaration(cn-22) number as tracking no. but it such cases the pen would be tracked only till the time it leaves U.S. border.

anyways...congrats on winning the pen... : )

Funny thing, I was always dead set against the 61 till I saw them in the flesh. I didn't like the idea of a skinny pen with a fragile hood, nor the idea of the arrow just being glued on. I saw quite a few at Signatures down in York, and realised they're not as skinny as I expected them to be, in fact they looked quite comfortable. Weirdly, I found the shape of the cap was more attractive in real life than in photos too.

that is great... : ) , have you decided which inks you would be using... ?

I think you will really enjoy the 61. I have one I bought in 1958 and use almost every day. Because of it's age, I try to handle it gently and it takes a little longer to fill than it did when new. The only real drawback is that it is a chore to change ink colors due to the difficulty of cleaning the capillary filler. I suggest you decide on an ink for the pen and rarely or never change. I find Parker blue works well in my pen.

Thanks Vikram,

I have decided to use either Mont Blank Royal blue or Chelpark Royal Blue. Do you suggest any other brand?

Ya Hopefully I will enjoy this. Its my dream come true. I have planned to use only Royal Blue Ink either from Montblac or Chelpark (Indian Brand).

I loved P61 right from the start. I remember vague memory of seeing P61 in my childhood with my neighbor. But by then I was too small to realize the value of it. Infact I thought it was a pen like Hero 336. (Really Funny). :D

Good buy Ramani.

You will enjoy the pen provided the capillary filler was well taken care of and is not choked. I lucked into some NOS 61s in Bangalore, the C/C filled versions with GT caps, I think I must have paid INR1500/- each.

Best

Congratulations on your purchase Krishnan!

When it arrives, I'd be interested to hear how the Parker 61 compares with the Hero 336. (Or if anyone else has both, would love to hear your comparison.)

I've had my eye on the 61 and recently purchased a 336 as an inexpensive "trial." And, well, now I wonder how similar the two pens actually are. I like the size and shape of the 336, but find the plastic, I'm not sure, maybe a little slick? Does the 61 feel similar in your hand? And how about the weight?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
