HisNibs.com update -- Monteverde Regatta Sport
February 27th, 2014

Greetings,

I was chagrined to see the recent retirement of the Regatta line of pens
from Monteverde. With it's magnetic cap, this had been one of my personal
'go to' pens over the past several years.

I'm happy to report that the Regatta has returned in the form of the Regatta
Sport
-- magnetic cap and all!

Go to its webpage to learn all about the line as well to see a video
appraisal -- including a look at the 'His Nibs' yacht.

As this newsletter goes out to a mailing list of thousands of customers,
please understand if there's a delay in answering your email queries or
orders after one of these is sent. We will respond in order received and as
soon as possible!

As with the previous iterations, the Sport is available in three color
combinations (if you consider black/black to be a combination ), and three
form factors -- fountain pen, rollerball and ball pen.

These are hefty, oversized pens, with the fountain pen measuring 5-3/8"
capped, 6-3/8" posted and 4-7/8" with cap held aside.

The largely metal pens alternate lacquered sections with carbon fiber
panels, separated by knurled rings...creating a very distinctive look.
Although the pens have a nice heft, this design prevents an overly-heavy
pen, and I've found them to be very well-balanced and a pleasure to write
with during extended composing sessions.

On the blog...Whatever happened to John Hancock?

"Another attempt to require the teaching of cursive handwriting dies in the
Indiana General Assembly. Some school districts still teach the artistic,
free-flowing and whimsical style of handwriting but some don't. The demise
of cursive handwriting leaves some experts worried that it could have an
impact on future generations."

An interesting fountain pen cartoon site:

"万年筆 (Man'nen'hitu{histu}) is the Japanese word for fountain pen. And it literally translates to the 10,000 year brush. This Reflects, at least in part, an attitude common in Japan about tools and instruments. That they should last a lifetime or more. This is a comic celebrating fountain pens, and their usage. It's also funny."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
