Translation of the Naginata togi's description:

長刀研ぎ万年筆

Naginata togi fountain pen

Life dwelling in characters.

Also, the aesthetic sense of the drawn line.

Sometimes for the spirit of using a brush, sometimes thinking of the passion of writing, always towards the varying elasticity of the writing feel.

The naginata togi, through his long term dream for the nib, a revived masterpiece of the craftsman’s heritage of tradition and engineering.

A certain new shape.

As the writing angle increases, the pen point becomes longer and wider.

Because of this, the smooth writing feel, whether thin or thick, even dealing with the deeply expressive and subtle differences of writing style, the most suitable nib for kanji, it is a refined writing instrument for the Japanese.

These can’t be polished without the craftsman’s skill, and are the ultimate realisation of the pursuit of writing feel.

For the complete enjoyment of writing every day…

Please treasure it forever.

What a beauty! It's a piece of art. So glad you'd got hold of it! Congratulations! I would also like to have a pen with a Naginata togi nib, good for writing Japanese or Chinese horizontally.

Exactly this one! You must be an expert to search for rather rare pens that are not famous especially outside Japan. I have met Mr.Nagahara several times, in pen clinics or lecture meeting, but I was not enough lucky to attend the reception.

I haven't been able to find a web page with a good picture of the nib, though. Does it have Nagahara san's signature, or the usual Sailor anchor logo?

I'd be very interested in a review of your pen, if you were to write one.

Gorgeous pen. I wish they had one more left in Maruzen because I will be there next week!! Use it in good health.

May I be indiscreet and ask what the price of such a masterpiece is?

You may: it was 63,000円, which was a bargain in my view.

If you have time to hunt for it, you may still be able to track one down. I only tried Itoya and Maruzen.

Enjoy your time in Japan!

I agree with you that it is a bargain! A piece of FP history.

I will go and look for it in several other stores in Tokyo.

Thanks for your kind wishes!

I was sorely tempted by the one they had in Itoya when I was last in Tokyo. Ive been somewhat regretting it ever since though wondering what the pen would feel like in hand. Unfortunately they seem to be considerably more expensive outside of Japan than within.

It has Nagahara's signature. Please do not expect too much for my review.

This nib is absolutely gorgeous.

Enjoy your pen. It seems to be a piece of FP history, a very rare collectible!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
