Thanks all for the comments.

I would not say they have the longevity or even quality of finish applied by Waterman but it's nice to see another colour and to accomplish.

The 3 together,

Very nice job again, Force.

But I still like the Ivory best, colour-wise.

If the paint jobs don't last, that can be an advantage, because then you can paint the pen a different color.

With almost all of the exterior material being metal, I wonder if you couldn't bake a lacquer finish on there like they used to do on cars. (Still do?)

Even if it has plastic insides, you could stick a thermometer probe inside and make sure it wasn't getting too hot.

Might greatly help the durability.

Are any of the Carene finishes rare?

An absolutely beautiful refinish/restore! Tranquil blue looks great with the gold, an unexpectedly great combination.

THE END

Another beautiful job with great attention to detail. The Carene is such a wonderful writer that it's worth the effort to make something unique.

Maybe another project but for £75 for three pens described as used but in excellent condition so we will see. The FP comes with both Medium and Stub sections.

So you can do a Pajaro-modification with one of your Phileas...

Sharp looking set of pens at a huge bargain. Wow!

I am thinking of looking for a spare Carene fountain pen barrel and a cap for my extra Carene nibs in lieu of using a Phileas. So far I have seen an orange cap and a blue barrel. There are possibilities, but they might look like Campbell's soup.

To Force, that would mean yet another project looming.....

Force! You totally had me on board with the demo shots of easing the nib out. Excellent tutorial!

Cool use to reno abused Carenes.. There ought to be Carene abuse hotline (your number;) whoever decimated that one, and with bad glue/no clue too. That one deserved new life with a nifty new color. (Like the last periwinkle, sightly askew from your exotic waterways).

Force onward I say!

Feel sorta bad I still have that Island Sands LE still sitting pristine, but though the sand is the understated color, seeing it altered when some day it will be desired as is, compels me to keep it that way until then.

Fun, interesting project. Thanks for sharing :)

I have a brand new black sea gloss barrel acquired from Lennard (Dutchpen) waiting for a new or good section then all I have to do if find a silver plated deluxe cap...Dear NRW please find enclosed a Carene which is in need of a replacement cap. I lost the original and this pen is of great sentiment to me etc etc...naaaa I don't think it will work, but worth a try maybe.

The set is due arrival today so we will see.

the only problem not described or photographed which earned the seller a neutral. All 3 pictures were so arranged to not include the cap top + were very blurred.

It was a gamble taken and well not lost because the section was worth the money.

A mortal sin for those compiling a perfect collection of all finishes, peanuts for those seeking a good writer at a pleasant price....

You could always do a cap project and fill the defect and then paint over it.

The seller has requested a photograph of the dink...I assume with the view to "it was not there when it left me" reply.

I am not unhappy and even if listed shown with the dink I would have bought it. Sellers MUST describe in full any item being sold.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
