What is question's answer's intended for?

I'm going to be very disappointed if someone doesn't fill out a spreadsheet and post a pie chart by the end of the week. :glare:

I've never been fascinated with ink, with the exception of Parker Penman Sapphire. (If I had a lifetime supply I wouldn't care about any other ink). Just some standards on my shelf, and maybe a few forgotten bottles still in the box that came with special edition pens.

This graph was accurate as of 1/16/13. I may have acquired an ink or two in the past year.

Let's see. I didn't originally sort out the list of inks I have that way (the ink table file is set up more or less by color family, and also includes samples), so I had to spend some time working my way through the file.

So, at current (approximate) count, as of 2/11/14 (and this is *just* bottles):

Noodler's -- 17 (including duplicates of Kung Te Cheng and Manhattan Blue; that number also includes two highlighter inks)

Diamine -- 14 (including the Flower Collection set); plus a 5 ml mini-bottle/sample of Matador Red)

FPN member Pharmacist's (home made iron gall inks) -- 5

Quink -- 4 (3 of which are vintage)

De Atramentis -- 3

Private Reserve -- 3

J Herbin -- 2; + 2 mini-bottles (purple and blue), that came in a glass pen set

Iroshihzuku -- 1

Sailor -- 1

Waterman -- 1

Platinum -- 1

Pelikan -- 1

Conklin -- 1

Pen & Ink -- 1

I *think* that I've got the count right -- discovered that I hadn't added a couple of bottles to the table, like 54th MA and Vert Empire....

Mind you, some of these I don't use much (if at all), and the duplicate bottles were mostly for purposes of backups. And some I just haven't gotten around to trying yet (more than half of the Flower Collection inks, for instance).

ETA: Ack! Forgot a brand! :headsmack: (Don't ask how -- you probably don't want to know and I sure don't either....) Add Rohrer and Klingner -- 2 to the list!

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I'm impressed.

You need a Rubinato or two. What about the BungBox or do you count those as Kobe / Sailor?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I need some Callifolio, also. :)

My own, arbitrary rule for the Sailor inks made for pen shops is to go by what the box says. Kobe Ink and Athena (made for Maruzen) get their own categories, 'cos that's what the boxes say. The Bung Box and Ishida Bungu inks say Sailor and "Jentle Ink" on the box, so they're under the Sailor category. On my spreadsheet, I include store origin in their names, like Bung Box Sapphire or Ishida Bungu Hakodate Twilight Blue, for example.

Noodler's Ink only.

Around 60 or 70 bottles, give or take 1 or 2, with multiples of some.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
