Pilot Preppy Hack Question

Hi guys,

I managed to do the Pilot Varsity transplant into the Platinum Preppy section.

I was wondering, in the future to rinse the pen, do we have to pull the whole nib and feed out to rinse? Or just running the whole nib+section under water/soaking the whole nib+section in water will do?

Any ideas? I do realise that the friction fit won't hold forever.

Flush water through the feed via the cartridge nipple on the back of the section using an ear syringe or similar squeeze bulb. Just rinsing in a stream of water doesn't get the feed as clean.

Okay noted! Thanks =)

By squeeze bulb, a pasteur pipette should work too right?

Oh right. I am having ink flow issues with the cartridge attached. I guess maybe is the ball bearing inside blocking the ink? (Or is it just me being impatient? I know fitting a cart into preppy didn't take that long to start)

Anyone knows where to get the adapter for platinum pens and maybe a international piston converter for cheap?

EDIT: I heard an Aurora/Parker Converter can fit into a Platinum Preppy. Can anyone verify this?

More likely that something is restricting either the ink or air channel. Start with the pressure flush, using a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid (1 drop to 1 cup of water) and plenty of patience. In theory, anyway, the cartridge nipple should prevent the ball inside the cartridge from causing any problems by holding it away from the opening.

And you can always go the eyedropper route with a Preppy body and a little silicone grease, regardless of what nib and feed you have stuffed into it. :-)

Okay guys, I got it to work.

Oddly for some reason, carts doesn't work yet, eyedroppers do.

I decided to try it out.

Parker&Aurora cartridges kinda fit Platinum pens (I tried by getting a colleague's used Parker cart, so I guess converters should be the same), so I inked up a Parker cart and plugged it into a Preppy with the Varsity nib.

Surprise surprise, no more ink flow issues! My guess is that the ball regulates the ink flow somewhat and reduces ink to the felt in the feed, probably is necessary in ensuring the Preppy nib and feed not to leak.

What's more, the Parker cart is SO long just like a piston filler pen's piston. Kinda have a large volume like an eyedropper yet without the mess.

Hope it helps everyone who hates eyedroppers =D

EDIT: I noticed a leak in the pen. Turns out the cart cracked! So screw all of this. Sorry for the misinformation.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
