Too Many Pens + Too Much Egg Nog = Estie With 14Kt Nib!

This was really fun :D . I have a Wearever Pacemaker sitting around in need of a section. I was drinking a glass of egg nog and looking at the nib and then I looked over at my Esties..hmmm :eureka:

I took the nib off of a bum 1555 nib/feed and less than 5 minutes later I had a perfect writing Estie with 14kt nib

The nib is a soft and a bit flexy, and it now writes a nice wet line.

Yes, it does look nice, I don't mind the contrast between the gold and the silver trim.

Great idea! I'd like it just for the flex of it.

Thanks, the nibs are really similar in size, although it did take some careful nudging to slide the nib into the feed housing. I can see it cracking if done with too much force.

I replaced the steel nib off my Pelikan 120 with a 14k Platignum nib from an eBay purchase that disintegrated upon delivery. Wow! Frankenpenning can be loads of fun!

I mentioned a transplant idea to a couple of our transplant surgeons here since I'm not capable myself.

Yall are gonna FREAK when and if one of them does it. [EDIT] and If it works of course.

Did you pull the nib out, or did you knock out the feed+nib?

Some of the collars have a notch that looks like it was meant to prevent the feed from being knocked out.

Thanks guys! I've written up a bit more and its keeping up, I think I have a keeper!

Since the nib was already no good I held the housing tight and pulled the nib out from its tip with pliars.

It is a tighter fit than the Esterbrook nib so I found it was easier to screw the housing back in before jamming the nib into it.

Edit to fix link, and to say that here is more reference material to egg you on with that nog.

Bringing these classics back up.

This shows real talent. This sort of thing can be fun. There are real possibilities for what you can do with Esties. If you have a two-tone nib, the finish match is assured. Happy Holidays!

Teri M (Peyton Street Pens) sells slim ebonite Ranga pens with 14-kt Wahl nibs that are super to write with. This slim model is called the Soquel.

I should add (kindv don't want to, cos I never mentioned it to Teri) that the aerometric filler doesn't work right. I don't care for this filling systems anyway, but since it's glued in, I can't fill the sac using a syringe.

Or can't I..., hm?

I can. Which is why I never bothered to mention it to Teri - I pinch the sac and slowly inject the ink through one of the channels on the feed. Before the ink can drip off, I let go of the sac, and physics takes over. Or continues. Anyway, it isn't the prettiest operation, but it works.

Oops, just saw that this is the Esterbrook Forum. You know what, though? Those Wahl nibs are great!

Is that a MB nib on the Estie? I don't think I could be 'mad scientist' enough to try that :-)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
