Twsbi Vac 700 Nib Widths

Hello there

Thinking about buying the TWSBI vac 700. I have a TWSBI mini with a broad nib (also 1.1) and it's more of a medium-broad -- and suits me fine.

Looking at the Goulet nib nook it seems the vac 700 nibs run broader -- is this your experience? The medium vac700 nib looks on par with the mini broad nib.

Not in my experience; they seem pretty comparable.

I've got a couple of Vac700's with EF (Bock and Jowo, all the rest are Jowo), F, M, and 1.1 nibs, and a Mini with EF and F nibs. The line width between the two pen types EF and F are the same as near as I can tell.

The Vac700 uses a #6 nib, and the Mini, IIRC, uses a smaller #5.

I was wondering if anyone could help comparing TWSBI nib sizes to lamy nibs. I want to order a vac 700 but was wondering how their fine compares to a lamy fine and their extra fine to a lamy extra fine

You'll find the Goulet's nifty comparison tool, the Nib Nook, handy I think. (Welcome to the forum, btw)

Thank you, I have compared them on there, but was looking for more of a personal preference on them. Also, thanks for the welcome.

Mine was wet (it's suffered from my nib tinkering in the interim, hence the past tense) but from my reading of this forum there seems to be more of a trend towards people reporting dryness with TWSBIs, so...

I really appreciate Brian's efforst on the nib nook, but for the sake of the legibility and aesthetics Brian writes as fast as a snail, so I don't count line thickness on the nib nook will give you a good idea on your writing speed.

One boring blue, one boring black 1mm thickness at most....

Then there are Fountain Pens with gorgeous permanent inks..

That's very interesting, because Goulet shows that Vac 700 runs wider than other TWSBI's pens

Hi, I have just purchased an amber Vac 300 with a fine nib and find it to be 'finer' than my Lamy Vista fine and my Parker Duofold fine. I am now wondering if a medium would have been better, but The Writing Desk only have smoke grey replacements. The Vac 300 is well-designed and comes well-packaged with tools. It is larger to hold than both other pens.

I own both the Mini and the Vac 700. For the Vac 700 I have both Medium and 1.1 stub, on the Mini I have a 1.1 as well.

The 1.1 on the Vac 700 does seem to be a tad wider than the 1.1 on the Mini, but not much. The 1.1 Mini and Medium Vac 700 nibs are nothing alike though.

... Never underestimate the power of human stupidity ...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
