Can A Lamy Safari Be A Nice Writer

Albinoni

Recommended Posts

Today at my local pen shop here in Perth, Australia I bought a Lamy Safari set which included a blue (metal body) Lamy Safari fountain pen with a 1.1 nib, a convertor and also 5 new ink cartridges that came in the box, was sort of like a special promotion kind of thing.

This is my first Lamy Safari and had always wanted to add one of these popular pens to my collection.

But can a Lamy Safari although not an expensive pen, be a nice writer too.

Thanks

Safaris have a great following. I have one too. So yes, they can be nice writers. It's good that you're at a shop. The nibs may not be perfect. See if you can try out different nibs.

Mine are among my best writers. The section, while somewhat uncomfortable for me, improves my handwriting.

I am at home now actually the time being 0:40, but bought this pen from my local Pen Shop here in Perth, Australia. I quite like the nib and its a 1.1 sort of more Italic type, but for a simple pen seriously its not a bad writer at all.

I have several. With the exception of one scratchy nib, which was easily replaced, they have been consistently reliable writers that have made some of my more finicky inks dance on the page. Rugged, too. I can't imagine not having all of them inked and at my side consistently, even as my collection expands into other brands and experiences.

I have 5 Safari's and 2 Lamy Joy's, along with about 12 nibs ranging from F to 1.9mm. Not a lemon in the bunch. I like both the feel and performance of the Safari and Joy models and especially the interchangeability of the nibs.

Alight ones however other more prominent brands like Sheaffer and Parker realise people don't want medium nibs that write like stub nibs / a Sharpie so make far better pens .

Absolutely. At times, I love my Al-Star more than my 2000. http://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

No matter the cost, any pen can a decent, if not a good and nice writer. If one is willing to devote a bit of tweak time, you can tease just about any pen into becoming a tool that is pleasurable to use. I just picked a Hero 382 for 7.75USD with shipping...a little attention to the nib and it's a super writer!

My Lamy Al-Star and my charcoal Safari are absolutely great pens.

Where would we be, without our wonderful rugged and cheap looking enough to not attract attention, Lamy Safaris and Vistas?

Hi,

The Lamy Safari and related pens can be excellent writers. My favorite nib for these pens is the Lamy A nib. It's a very smooth, trouble free nib. If I had to choose a German pen with a steel nib, I would definitely get a Lamy with an A nib. Of course, most any decently made nib can be adjusted and ground so that it writes well.

Yes, a Safari can be a good writer. Given Lamy's legendary indifference to quality control, it can also be scratchy, not the width it was supposed to be, or it can have feed problems or a leaking converter. The quality of Lamy pens is in their customer service, not in what they initially sell you--they do stand behind their products.

There are two issues, however, that customer service can't fix. Some people initially, or eventually, dislike the weird shape of the section, which was allegedly designed for the particular grip taught in German schools. And for what they are, Safaris are wildly overpriced. There are pens as good or significantly better for a fraction of the money--but without the Lamy variable quality and without the fine customer service.

Of the LAMY Safari series, the Safari has an ABS, plastic body. The metal bodies are aluminum, and called "Al-Star". The transparent plastic body pens, of the same style, are called "Vista". it is an excellent pen for rough environments and, in my experience, writes very nicely For a high school or college student, it is an excellent choice.

It will probably last 3.5 generations.

How does the A nib write in practice? How doe it compare with Lamy XF/F/M/B nibs?

Horrible writers.....German schools go pencil, Safari, to ball point.

Then there is that grip.... training a poor kid for an American P-75.

Horrible nibs can be changed or wider or narrower horrible nibs in a jiffy.

Comes in a lot of horrible colors too....got that horrible bauhaus clip.

Lamy sells 600,000 pens a year...and a vast majority of them are those horrible Safari's.

You can of course buy a Hero cheap Safari clone if you wish....I wonder if the Safari nib will fit?

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
