Toucan Ink Compilation

Recommended Posts

Here's a writing sample of the 14 different Toucan inks that JustWrite Pen Company (no affiliation) very kindly sent to me.

I found the inks in general to be:

  • Very well-behaved and did not show any observable bleedthrough on "Double A" A4 sheets.
  • Neither dry nor wet, but not lubricated. No feathering on paper tested.
  • Quite unsaturated, especially the Black. The Black is more like a very dark grey, which gives it a vintage (IMO) character. However Primrose and Orange has a nice popping colour.
  • Some inks i.e Turquoise and Aqua had quite a long drying time but the others are acceptable.

I didn't test whether the inks are waterproof, but an accidental droplet on the Turquoise sample shows it is quite washable. I've also Photoshopped the scans so that they match the real life colours.

Overall, I'm impressed with the wide range of colours available and their behaviour on cheap paper. Any other questions are welcome. :)

Really digging some of those colors... The gold is nice, as is sienna, and the blues and green are beautiful!

Be forewarned... I will eye-bang the bejeezus out of your pens...

Can I convince you to send a written sample for the 2014 Fade Test?

thanks for sharing. i like the sienna and the black. sienna for the 'golden brown' look and black for it's 'charcoal grey' look.

Primrose looks like a good, local option for my Kaweco Sport that I plan to use as a highlighter - great thanks

Okay, I confess, I laughed first and hummed the song second before finally typing my groan.

Southworth Diamond White (25% cotton, white, 20lb):

Observations:

  • All seemed well behaved and cleaned easily.
  • While not one of the supersaturated lines of ink, overall I do not mind the saturation level. The exception is Violet. Violet is a nice color, but when I look at the lineup as the a whole, I can not help but thinking the thing that it is missing is a nice rich purple.
    • An evaluation in dryer pens or finer nibs might be warranted for those concerned.
  • Out of all the yellow inks I have tried, Primrose is the only yellow I have seen that has a green tinge in the bottle. It still ends up on the page as yellow. It is a bright yellow, I am thinking the green is something like safety green, which is why the yellow is bright on the page.
  • The Orange is probably the most interesting ink. It is bright, makes me think of Noodler's Dragon Napalm. Probably not quite the same level, but that is what it makes me think of.
  • If you zoom in on the Gold "swatch" on the Southworth paper you can just make out the cool orange edging that appeared. Not sure if that could be brought out in regular writing with the right paper and nib.
  • Thankfully, Gold dried a little darker than it looked going down. It seemed hard to read going down but is fine as I look at it now
  • I am used to Noodler's inks which tend to be towards the wet/smooth end, so I am accustomed to that spectrum. 1-7 except orange (4) were notably dryer and rougher writers. It switched to being a much smoother experience with Aqua or Turquoise and pretty much stayed that way.

Edit - Bonus: Swatches of all colors as seen on the top of sample vials:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
