Caliken's Calligraphy

caliken

Recommended Posts

Over the past six years, I have posted many images on this forum.

I've found that some have fallen through a hole in my Photobucket and are no longer visible.

I'm often asked for the location of a particular image, and as the forum has grown to such an extent, it's now become time-consuming to locate them, if indeed they are still there.

I've decided to do as others have done recently, and start my own "Caliken's Calligraphy" topic comprising my Calligraphic work.

From now on, my images will be easily accessible both to myself and to anyone who cares to look at them.

Any comments and/or criticisms are welcome, as usual.

Ken

The first image is a take-off of an Eighteenth century self-promotion - updated with the addition of a little Spencerian!

It seems appropriate to start off in Gothic Script with my own personal homage to the great man!

I like the simple, unadorned italic at the end there. I want my handwriting to look like that. It's a good thing I just got an italic and flex nib so I can start practicing.

Some people see things that are and ask, Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not? Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that.

I always feel like I'm being slightly chastised whenever these topics come up (since you're most likely referring to my question...) but I don't really mind if it means we get to see all your lovely images in one place! Wonderful work as always, Ken!

I thought you'd like to know. Since I've started University about two weeks ago, I've begun to audit a calligraphy class. The main focus of the class is italic handwriting, with emphasis on the italic, design/layout of pages, etc. Self study might be done in other broad script hands as well. It seems to be a very basic class and, with my previous exposure to class, I'm already among the more talented students. However, I'm seeing it as a good opportunity to get better at my spacing, consistency and line straightness. I may attempt to see if I can do my self-study in Spencerian rather than a broad script. If not, I shall endeavor to practice either a gothic fractur style or (bleep) secretary.

(By the way. I'm in love with that W of yours in the very first image! Looks like it would've taken forever to do)

Weirdly enough, I personally find the Blackletter easier to read (and less "flowery") than the pointed pen style exemplar. But then, I do medieval recreation/reenactment, so I'm used to hanging around with calligraphers and illuminators.

A week ago, I spent twenty minutes searching for an old posted image, only to find that it had somehow been removed. It was this that finally made me decide to start this personal topic of images. Your recent request for a re-posting of a particular image, was purely co-incidental.

I really appreciate your interest in my work, and wish you well in your new project.

I felt the same way, Ruth. Not that the pointed pen above the Blackletter was difficult, just that something about the Blackletter for me was easier.

Could it have been the Old English stencils I had as a kid and used - a lot?

Great work, Ken! Keep it coming!! :)

Lovely Ken, thank you so much!

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
