Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'll agree, it doesn't look exactly like emerald city green to me either. It's really closer to wicked witch green.

Yeah... but I think WWG would be a little more muddy and murky.

I referenced your reviews in one of my other reviews.

True. WWG would. Though maybe not Wicked! Broadway Green :)

Thanks :)

I have a sample of this ink, and I agree that the color isn't what I think of for "emerald". Although I'm not sure I would have called it WWG either (assuming you're basing it on the MGM movie -- that's a more bilious color than this ink). Saw the first National Tour of _Wicked_ a few years ago, but I don't remember the makeup job that well at this point. Ironically, if you go back to the original W. W. Denslow illustrations from the book, she isn't green at all... but she does have an eyepatch, and gravity-defying (or starched beyond all possible recognition) pigtails that stick straight out from her head. Go figure. It's been too many years since I read the book to know what Baum himself actually wrote as a description....

BTW -- one thing I *do* remember about the book is that everything in the Emerald City (including the inhabitants) were green because they were required to wear green tinted glasses....

As for the ink, I haven't made up my mind about whether I like it or not. I'm very picky about greens and the only two I've really been completely happy with (so far) are the reformulated Noodler's Army Green (need to do a comparison with the "returned to original to keep the masses happy" version), and J. Herbin Vert Empire. Both of which lean towards the more yellow side of the spectrum to varying degrees. I do like the fact that it's not as "in your face" as either Noodler's Green or PR Spearmint, and it's dark enough to be relatively legible (my complaints with both Diamine Kelly Green and Diamine Meadow).

Plus, I somehow just keep thinking that OSLFB should have some sheen to it. But either I'm *completely* deluding myself (and imagining a bit of silver sparkle), or it needs to be in a much wetter pen than a Parker Vector with a medium nib....

Hmmm.... I think with any other name, I would like this ink, but it's still not a color I would use.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, I've just now finished up the Baum ink in my 540. I discovered that on some papers, it has a lot more shading.

  • 1 year later...

I'm glad I opened this thread. Unlike my fellow FPNers I like the color. I thought it was going to be a (achingly) bright Irish green (totally unusable for me) but it turns out to be a pleasant tealish blue-green.

I'm going to pick up a bottle (or two) when I see it at my favorite b&m.

I really like this color, as mentioned it is not what I would consider Emerald in color...however it is pleasant enough to be used as an ink for a daily writer.

@ PS104 and @ flexy:

That's the great thing about this hobby -- er, obsession. There is enough variety for everyone to play. There are colors I love and colors I think are completely hideous -- and other people think the exact opposite about those same inks. And I like the subtle nuances sometimes -- so I really *should* have gotten a bottle of Blue Merle when I had a chance, even though Ackerman #9 is similar.

Even "black" inks can be relatively different. Iroshihzuku Take-sumi is not what I would call "black" but is sort of a velvety color of "not *quite* black but not really grey either". OS Charles Darwin was the blackest ink I have ever encountered -- blacker than almost anything I've ever seen, including Noodler's Black and Aurora Black (plus it dried super fast) -- but the spread and show through was horrible. The only black that might come close is Sailor Kuwa-guro (the pigmented Nano Black) -- and that did not work at ALL in a Preppy set up as a rollerball pen. And De Atramentis Black Roses had shading. And no, NONE of the aforementioned have become my black ink of choice; I still use plain old Quink Black, mostly for testing new to me pens. Because I'm just not a black ink person. YMMV

I have a bottle of this purchased at a pen show this spring after looking a a swab of it and liking the blue-greeness of it. I fall in and out of love with it as I use it in different circumstances; though I still love the name. I am a big fan of L. Frank Baum and have a collection of all his OZ books.

I currently have it in a Sheaffer NoNonsense with a fine nib and use it for doodling and follow-up on notes taken with another pen.

I really wanted to use it in my Maximillian Emerald Nib Creaper, but could never get it to flow properly. My daughter is using it in a Welsharp/Wearever combo pen/cil which seems to bring out a deeper color than my NoNonsense.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
