Caran D'ache Blue Night

The Colours of the Earth series has a few of my absolutely favourite inks. This one is fine, but definitely not a big winner in my eyes.

As blue-grays go, this one seems a little bland to me, mainly because the colour in the areas where it shades lighter is SO washed out. On papers that bring out the shading, it can look nice, bBut generally I find it kind of boring. As far as blue-grays go, there are plenty of other options with more pizzazz out there.

I generally agree with your sentiments. I received a bottle of this ink within the presentation box when I purchased a Leman fountain pen. It is an awful ink - the colour is insipid and what's more it fades to a sort of grey after a short period. One filling was too much - anyone want a spare bottle?

Favourite pens in my collection (in alpha order): Caran d'Ache Ecridor Chevron F and Leman Black/Silver F; Parker 51 Aerometric M and F; Parker 61 Insignia M, Parker Duofold Senior F; Platinum #3776 Century M; Sailor 1911 Black/Gold 21 Kt M; Sheaffer Crest Palladium M/F; Sheaffer Prelude Silver/Palladium Snakeskin Pattern F; Waterman Carene Deluxe Silver F

Blah, you're right. This color puts me to sleep....

(Now if it was, say, Diamine Prussian Blue, or Chopin, or even Iroshizuku Shin-kai...that'd be exciting.)

A pity, since I have a soft spot for blue-grays. This is more like a blah-gray. =p

  • 2 weeks later...

yeah, i agree. kinda a washed out dark blue. i was expecting a darker shade of blue, considering it is a 'night' blue ink.

The colour shows a massive improvement when Diamine Sapphire is added 25% to the ink, probably work well with any other brighter blue.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
