My New Born: The "oversize" Bulk Filler" Prototype !

Recommended Posts

Hi all !

Ive just finished a new Bulk filler version, being an " oversize" prototype version in the excellent black SEM ebonite.

As you will see, I've made 2 versions, being a "posting" and a "non posting version".

The "posting" version features the narrower barrel step, allowing posting cylindrically deep in the cap.

My wife claims it breaks somewhat the fluent lines of the pen, so I've also made also a non posting version.

Now I don't know what you all think about it, so I would appreciate your input on which version you would prefer....

Given the pen is rather long, posting is surely not neccesary to improve writing comfort, but some writers do tend to stick to posting....

The pen has approximately the size a a Pelikan 1000, although 5 mm shorter.

Some technical details :

- Cap diameter 16.5mm

- Body diameter 14 mm

- Capped length 140 mm

- Uncapped length 135mm

- Posted length 165 mm

- Nib : size 8 14K Bock 1.2 mm stub with hard rubber feed

- Weight capped/ posted 30 grams

- Weight uncapped 22 grams

- Ink intake 2.8 ml

- Bulk filler filling system with Integrated ink shut-off valve

- Bulk filler logo both on cap and barrel top

Note this is only a prototype which is not yet available for sale!

Never the less I would appreciate you opinion if CONID should start to make an "oversize" version, and if you would prefer the "posting" or the "non posting" version.

Also don't hesitate to comment on other aspects of the pen, your opinion is much important to us !

Note the thread clutch between the section and barrel is made from Ketron Peek, in the final stage this clutch will be made titanium.

Thanks in advance for your valued input !

Regards, Francis

PS : allowing the ink to pass the shut-off valve one has to open the filling knob 1.5- 2.0mm.

Easy to do on the OS version, one opens the filling knob still one just sees to the edge of the titanium barrel enclosure

screw... ( see last added picture)

The 'non posting" version:

The last two pictures show the posting version ( note the double logo is also on this version)

Ink shut off is fully open when one sees the edge of the barrel enclosure flange :

Is that a green ink window? It's beautiful!

I also much prefer the non-posting version---the narrow barrow step on the posting version looks too skinny and sudden to match with the rest of the pen. Lacks harmony to my eyes.

I do wonder if there's an option to make the clip and cap ring match the nib, though? I know some people like silver-colored trim, but I'm a big fan of gold (or gold plate, or gold paint). Pairing it with the green ink window would be such a lovely, warm, vintage effect. I guess it's all personal taste.

Thank you for showing us pictures of your prototype. It's turning out to be quite the temptation...

Thanks Hari!

Also thanks for posting the pictures, could you please also post the other ones?

I'm unfortunately rather clumsy with computer stuff.....

Thanks Jadie !

The ink window is yellow

My wife fully agrees with you on the posting version, not very harmonious to her eyes...

As for making gold a gold plated clip and cap ring, I think this should be possible, question is if one can gold plate titanium..

Beautiful! Well done on both of them, but I think that I prefer the non-posting version as well.

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

Great pen in every sense of the word.

I like the non posting version more and think it would be awesome in cumberland ebonite.

Montblanc Royal Blue (bought a few before they stopped making it....not sure if the replacement is the same) =)

I prefer the non-posting version too. I'm in the habit of never posting pens because of wear and tear on the barrel (but those rubber things do seat very nicely). Looks-wise, I prefer without. Really stunning pen

Today I have seen this Kingsize Bulkfiller in real, absolutely stunning in shiny black with a huge nib. I prefer the non posting version. The new Conid logo is also very nice. Great job, Francis.

Another vote for non-posting. :)

I'm a smaller person with smaller hands who likes smaller pens, so this isn't my personal cup of tea. It is gorgeous, though, and I think many people would love it.

I also prefer the non-posting version. I don't post my pens; however, if you want to do a posting version I think it would look better if you replaced the barrel step with a longer taper like the Franklin Christoph model 02.

I've been resisted the temptation of previous bulk fillers mostly because they're smaller than I prefer. Combine M1000 size, a #8 nib, and a unique filling mechanism: the only question is whether or not I'll be able to afford one...:(. Ebonite is one of my favourite pen materials, and a someone else mentioned I'd like to see these in Cumberland and some of SEM other woodgrain/ripple/swirl colour patterns.

I prefer the posting version. I much prefer to post my pens, including larger ones like the Pelikan 1000 and the MB 149, ESP. If I'm writing a lot. I purchased the streamline Bulkfiller and almost always use it posted.

Awesome! One thing that I have been hesitating about is whether the bulkfillers are a bit too small for my hands. An OS version (M1000 size) does the trick! Definitely prefer the non-posting version; also agree that the gold nib looks a bit odd with the titanium furniture. Gold furniture would look much better, but really I would buy this today if it was available. And if it's available in a nice celluloid... :yikes:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
