Oh, you bought a Javelin! This was my first "serious" fountain pen, and still one of my favorites. I have it in that finish, and find it to be a very smooth writer for the price segment. It's a pen that doesn't seem to surface on FPN very often (partially because it's been discontinued). How are you liking it?

Does yours have "Japan" engraved on the side of the clip near where it attaches to the cap? It's interesting that yours is plastic, painted to look like metal (mine is actual brushed chrome, I believe). Apparently there were two versions of the Javelin...an earlier Japanese model (not sure who built it) and a later Chinese version.

Dirck has a good write up about it on his site, and how it spawned into the 100 and the 300 (sorry for not linking to it--I'm not the best with that on my iPad).

I think it's design is a nice homage to the Imperials in its profile, and to the Targa with its clip. It pairs very nicely with the 300 and is nearly identical in size.

The only problem I've had is the rubber grip wearing out on my first Javelin; but that was after very heavy use and improper care (before I learned the proper way to care for pens.

(Might help if I actually looked at the thing more closely).

I was wrong, it is real steel (amazing the things you find out about something when you start flicking it, haha).

And yup, "Japan" is engraved in the side of the clip.

Sweet!

Given your love of inks and stellar ink reviews, if you've got them, mine looooves Lamy Turquoise and Aurora Blue. However, mine is the fat medium, rather than your fine.

  • 1 year later...

I just bought several of these and had Art (LahLahLaw) stub the nibs. WOW what a great pen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
