and not a mention of the most obvious....bent nib

If I may add to my post above....the trowsis, I suppose being footballers they had to be baggy....it leaves plenty of room for some fancy ball work.

As he mentions: the nib is shaped like an eagles beak...

Yeah, so I stumbled across this listing and figured it'd be appropriate for this thread.....

"IMAGE OF A LADY" IN THIS WATERMAN'S #55 WOODGRAIN FOUNTAIN PEN

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IMAGE-OF-A-LADY-IN-THIS-WATERMANS-55-WOODGRAIN-FOUNTAIN-PEN-/331193664257?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d1cae4301

According to the auction listing:

"I admired this pen for many weeks without any knowledge of what lie hidden within the woodgrain. Upon examination of the barrel there is a "Image of a Lady" revealed. I captured her in the photographs. I am a novice Waterman fountain pen collector but I have reviewed hundreds of listings for Waterman fountain pens and have yet to find anything like this. Her image is a small treasure hidden within a great Woodgrain #55.

As far as I can tell this is truly a one-of-a-kind collector's choice. It captures the mystique of a beautiful vintage large Waterman's fountain pen and the mystery of the image!"

I like it!

Can't afford it, mind you, if I found something like this I likely wouldn't sell it...

I agree that the "image of a lady" is neat and unique, but does not necessarily justify a premium price. I suppose I am cynical, but I can just envision people starting a fad by selling HR Ripple pens with 'hidden images'...

That would be funny....

I admit, I looked over most of my HR pens looking for hidden images.

I found none, well nothing that didn't look like a Rorschach test...

I also agree that I wouldn't pay 3-5 times normal value.

Good call on the Rorschach test reference!

That was reaching a bit far. I thought it looked like a bug eating a hard rubber tree.

Nice!

I showed it to my girlfriend and she swore up and down that she was able to see the "image of a lady". I tried my best to see it, but I'm still not convinced! Perhaps a very abstract lady...

What I saw was only a face, not the whole body.

I guess my imagination is working at full steam today. I looked again here at work on a full monitor (not just on my iPhone's itty bitty screen) and it is really obvious to me. But, I also like and create camouflage art, so go figure...

That's not something every collector doesn't hope to own some day!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
