Waterman Blue-Black, Handwritten Review

Further notes: I got this bottle from someone on Classifields a while back. I don't think I am remotely the first person to notice that the "blue-black" is a misnomer! It's a pretty blue, tending a bit teal, but I cannot for the life of me see any black in it. It's also a little pale to read in this italic nib, and also in the finer nibs I have tried. I'd probably want to use this with a thicker nib and a wet writer for legibility. Still, it's such a nicely behaved ink that I'm very fond of it, even if I'll probably move on to one of Diamine's many blue offerings when the bottle's through. (If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears!)

I started with this ink when I got back into pens a couple of years ago. Saw it on a website probably. It's the conversion to teal that I just don't like and I rapidly moved on to Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black which I admit is difficult for some folks to get.

As for the Diamines - well their reformulated Blue-Black is a gem and well worth the effort of seeking out. Mine has a small sticker - R2 - inside the box on the base but I suspect that any ne supplies or stocks will be the new stuff. I can't guarantee it of course.

Here's an example.

Oh, that does look nice. Thanks for the rec! I'll have to check that out next time I'm ordering ink samples.

I actually do like teal/turquoise, but I was surprised when I first wrote with Waterman Blue-Black and I saw it change as it dried. The difference was pretty dramatic.

I'm currently using Quink Blue/Black cartridges in a Parker 88, but will get a bottle of the Waterman version when they run out.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
