Well, it sold so I found something else. I bought it before that one sold, too. A Wahl Gold Seal.

Guess what?! My boyfriend bought me my first Mabie Todd on eBay last night! I'm sooooo excited! It's a 3220, fully restored and in perfect working order. I cannot wait for it to arrive! Congrats on your great find! It looks marvelous!

My husband and I ventured to the antique mall here in Hyde Park today as we'd found nothing at the consignment shop save for a nice Deco or Nouveau ink blotter, possibly bronze and definitely marble for $8. At the antique mall, I saw quite a few fountain pens but one caught my eye- this Mabie Todd Swan 3260 (3 meaning it's a lever pen and 2 designating the nib #-- Thanks to FPN member Malcy for this information on another Mabie Todd thread.)

The pen needs a new sac and I'd like to replace it on my own, if possible. I'll be researching that on here, but for now, I wanted to share photos of my find. I bought this for $10. I think I got a pretty good deal. I was lucky enough to find out more about the pen's provenance as well. I looked up the name on it: V.T. Sergison. Victor T. Sergison was born in Tombridge,England in 1920 and passed away this year in March in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Thanks for looking!

It should be clear from my avatar where my loyalties lay (not to mention my moniker...).

Here are four of my Swans: three leverless pens and a self-filler:

post-117400-0-81448400-1417639660_thumb.jpg

Left to right: L330/64, ?, possibly L300/64 but unmarked and finally and more on-topic a 3250 Calligraph model. All the Leverless pens have fine, flexible No 3 nibs, the Calligraph has a No 2 Calligraph nib.

Best wishes

Here are another six Swans:

Left to right, a 230/50 with incorrect period cap, a 230/60 missing a lot of its gold plate (!) a leverless Calligraph that is actually pale green (so much for digital cameras!) a New York Swan with glorious nib a clipless 44ETN and a L206/60.post-117400-0-17374600-1417733501_thumb.jpg

Nice pens - well found!; I presume that the one in the middle is a 1043? Green marble leverless with No 4 nib? And does the one on the right carry any number?

My Swan news for the week: finally got around to re-saccing my leverless 4460 (used a #23 necked sac) and bought, and restored, a 3230 with a flexible italic nib (below)

Yes if you can find them the necked sac is the correct solution for a leverless.

That's a very smart 3230; it is not getting any easier to find grey Swans that have not discoloured - weel done!

Thanks, pen plastics in general seem to age well in New Zealand with its temperature, moist climate. Also possibly the low level of air pollution compared to industrial areas of Britain. Hard rubber ages not so well, probably due to high UV levels. An interesting discussion to be had in general about the environmental effects on vintage pens in different parts of the world!

Well I think, as I am sure you would agree, that there is more to it than UV and humidity and pollution etc. There's "happenstance" too.

Here are two BHR pens from the UK , both about the same age most likely:

And here three grey Swans I had and sold last year

Odd isn't it!

You're right of course, there will be more variation within any location than there is between locations.

Any idea what this might be? I'm trying to decide whether to bid on it or not...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
