Historic Ads Gallery (Ii)

I announced last time more than 3 year ago, when I got the 500 scan goal reached. Today I got the 1000th, adding this nice Dunhill-Namiki advertisement from '30s.

425px-193x-Namiki-Flattop-MakiE.jpg

I have to thanks Armando Dabbene, one of the most prominent italian fountain pens collector, that sent to me his whole collection (hundreds of ADs) for scanning. I was thanks to him that I could reach the 1000 goal. But also many people from here sent me scans of their ads, and I want to thanks them also.

You can find the full gallery with all the scans here:

http://www.fountainpen.it/ADs

almost all of them are full resolution (300 or 600dpi). The ADs are classified by brand, and you can find links to all brand sub-galleries at the top of the page.

But using the semantic database that I installed some time ago, I could also classify them for the magazine where they were published, the country, the date, and the model (or the models) advertised. All these "properties" can be searched, in the bottom of each AD page there should be a fact box that allows a "semantic navigation". So you can search looking at them grouped by these properties. If it does not appear, as sometime happen, you can use the last link in the left sidebar (Browse properties).

The gallery is roughly chronologically ordered, as I used the date as the beginning of the name, but that number can be inaccurate because I still provide a date for each of them, also when I don't know it for sure. In that case I will mark it as a guess. But to get that you have to look at the information inside the page not the name. When I have an hint or I know the date, I explain inside the page how dating has been done, with the only exception of the ADs having the date imprinted in itself. I cared to write all explanation both in italian and english.

All of this can be shared, and freely reused in the wikipedia style. I will gladly add any ADs sent to me, and I will also grant write access to the wiki to anyone wanting to contribute.

Regards

Simone

Thank you for sharing this.

I have a few antique pens and have enjoyed seeing the advertisements from the time when they were hottest new invention.

Simone;

Great effort! It has enough ads to be effective and the extra work in putting down models is commendable. I'm finishing up Sheaffer ads now that I will be putting up on my web site that will have around 500 ads but, it's a specialized project. Some of your 1920's Wahl ads I'd not seen before, I find the colored airplanes very attractive. As this is not a specialized area for me I will send you over a couple more that are in this theme.

Thanks for you appreciation, I'm glad you can find them useful.

When you'll publish yours let me know, I'll add proper links. I'm starting to search for other ads repository and add links the top of the page.

<p>Holy cats!  For those of us that like fiddly period detail, that's an AMAZING resource, and no small amount of labour. <img class="bbc_emoticon" src="https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/notworthy1.gif" title=":notworthy1:" /></p>

well... that will teach me not to edit out a minor typing error.

For people eventually searching the page, I'm in the middle of a domain transfer, it will be back soon, but it's still temporarily available at the alternative address:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
