Thanks!

Sorry I forgot to mention - I used a burin from my block printing/wood engraving days.

:)

Looks like you have good control of the burin! Are you still doing printmaking or have fountain pens taken over?

Did you fill the engraved lines with ink to creat the contrast?

You have really become a master of the custom pen. I enjoy seeing your creative use of materials

Thanks so much! I haven't picked up the burin in over a year and a half! I was quite rusty! Towards the end it started coming back to me.

As for in-fill, I need to get something for that. This is just green buffing compound from the buffing wheel. :P

Wow, I haven't even gotten my first Newton pen and you're already tempting me to get a second? Shame on you :)

Fantastic work, Shawn!

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

Whoa thanks! :D I'm absolutely glowing with all the positive response from this endeavor.

I can't wait to have one of these urushi'd by my buddy in Japan!

---b/c I'm not doing urushi anymore but I think it would look cool done up like that. :)

At last!!

Shawn, your pens are great, no question. But I have seen some of the real visual art you can do (I still love that awesome trout print of yours on my wall), and have really been hoping you could find a way to apply that incredible talent somehow to your pens.

And then you go and do it! That little bit of engraved work is absolutely stunning - I can't wait to see what you will come up with in the future!

I think I may have to commission some engraving, if you carry on like this...

Cheers,

Ken

Edit: Hey, what did you use to stain the engraving?

Thanks so much!

:)

THe stain... heheheh...

it's a brown crayon rubbed in. But then I buffed it and it all turned sorta green from the green buffing compound. It still looks dark though.

I'm going to get some in-fill from Hobby Lobby so I can do light or dark fills.

These are really cool. Have you thought about engraving the likeness of the pen owner? It sounds cheesy, but some of your students may get a real kick out of that.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
