21 Caran D'ache Inks In Comparison

Recommended Posts

As mentioned 3 days ago, here is a comparison of all 21 CdA inks.

http://i654.photobucket.com/albums/uu264/peli46/21_CdAs.jpg

I must say, Brian was right. All 12 are really new. No identical pairings, no renamings.

I lined them up -- side by side -- in the way I thought there might be at least some resemblance -- if at all. Yes, some are a bit similar but IMO not identical.

Spot-on in your observations and decuctions, my good fellow.

Award yourself a couple of bottles of gleaming amber fluid - Twisted Spire not Edelstein!

Hi,

Many thanks for the swab comparisons! :)

As you mention that "All 12 are really new." it seems that some exploration is in order. Can the Organic Brown top Grand Canyon?

Judging by the real McCoy (alongside my scan on the screen), no, the Organic is a bit too red.

The Ultra Violet appears to be very close to Storm in your scans. If so that is a very good thing. And, thank you for your efforts.

Ned, thanks. Your observation nails mine down. For me, those two are the very most similar. But -- as in all cases, wherever there is / might be a similarity -- the new ones all seem to be a bit darker. I find most of them also somewhat more saturated... black as well!

Yes, thanks for posting this. It's a great help. Organic Brown looks like it's nice but it's not Grand Canyon, I'm glad I have an unopened bottle.

How strange. It seems like they have gone from featuring unique/unusual colors to a more generic palette.

So this begs the question--Why would a typical consumer pony up for super-expensive ink?

There's no single answer to that question. Different people will have different reasons for doing so, and there are probably multiple factors in play for anybody. I suspect that "a color I can't get elsewhere" is one of the biggies for most people, however, and most of those new colors look pretty ordinary at first glance.

Thanks for the comparison.

Storm is one of my favorite inks, but the new one looks very similar.

Fortunately my Storm, Caribbean Sea and Amazon depot will last a while. :)

I agree, especially in the case of Caribbean Sea versus Hypnotic Turquoise.

Divine Pink stands out, but it's a dead ringer for Diamine Amaranth, which is much cheaper, and well-behaved.

Thanks for the swabs. I'll try to keep an open mind because performance might be worthy, but honestly, I doubt I'll ever buy one of these inks.

I know my id is "mhosea", but you can call me Mike. It's an old Unix thing.

Great.

Mike are you going to dig out the good paper and do a shading test?

Quite an eye-opener to see the "before and after" set of inks. Seems as though Caran was bitten by the Noodler's colour saturation and vibrancy bugs. The old inks looked like washed-out pastels when placed beside the new boys on the block.

...and, of course, many thanks for shouldering the expense to enlighten us all.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have to buy 1 New CdA just for the beauty of bottle holding ink, maybe Infinite Grey,

because this shade is missing from my collection of 40/50 bottles. Hope, it beats my

current No.1 Ink Bottle-Pelikan Edelstein, #2 New Mont Blanc, #3 Pilot Iroshizuku &

at No.4 is Old CdA bottle.

Thanks for sharing your experience Mike. Concerning the green , which is greener , Amazon or Vibrant Green ? And for the Infrared, is it really red , or does is it has Orange or Pink undertones ?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
