Visconti Dreamtouch Pen Case

I thought I'd post something a little different for a review - the Visconti Dreamtouch pen case. This is a fairly new line for Visconti and I've had it for a few days to test it out.

This review is for the 12 pen case but I believe Visconti also makes a 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 pen case design.

First off, I'd like to thank Dennis from La Couronne du Comte. Dennis is a true gentlemen not only in terms of communications, but also taking great care in ensuring his products reach the intended audience in the best possible manner.

Here's the initial package I received. Very nicely wrapped. First impressions count and I haven't even opened the box yet!

Off comes the wrapper and I see the standard Visconti cardboard box. So far, so good.

The case comes wrapped in an inner cloth bag. Nice. The leather is kept safe and won't scratch.

Here are a couple of views of the external case. The leather, as described by Visconti, is aniline and goes through their "Dreamtouch" process to provide a truly soft touch. I can vouch that this is indeed the case. The leather isn't so soft that anything could mark it up but it definitely is very supple. The feel is definitely of quality.

The overall dimensions are 26.5 cm x 16.0 cm. In person, it's not a large case at all.

Next, the inside. Each compartment is separated by it's own divider. The internal lining is a high density velvet material. The length of each divider is long. My main concern was the width. Would it be able to hold my larger pens? I couldn't find any literature from Visconti about the size of each divider so I took a gamble. I'm pleased to say that each divider is indeed wide. I've got my largest pen in there, the Montegrappa Extra 1930 (11/16" wide), and it fits without a problem. For comparison, I've stuck a few other pens in there, such as a standard Montblanc, Visconti Homo Sapiens, Delta Gallery, and a few others.

Here are my rankings:

Design - 10/10 - This is exactly how I would want to design a case myself. Not too big, holds a good number of pens (12), and keeps each one separated by it's own compartment. Visconti makes this

Construction/Build Quality - 10/10 - Visconti uses a high grade leather. The craftsmanship from the sewing to the embossed logo is first rate.

Price - 9/10 - This is a tough call. Of course, I'd love to only have paid $10 for it. But, knowing reality, you get what you pay for, The 12 pen case was being sold for 90 EUR (VAT included) but I'm not in the EU so didn't have to pay VAT. Also, Dennis also offers a 5% discount code for FPN users. I'm quite happy with what I paid, relative to what I could have paid.

Overall rank - 9.5/10 - I really cannot find fault with the product. It is a well made pen case without being ostentatious. The reason for the 0.5 subtraction was, well, it's hard for me to give a 10/10 for anything.

Final thoughts: I was looking for a quality pen case and was on the fence about ordering the Markiaro for a long time. However, one thing I wasn't sure about with the Markiaro was the elastic used and whether that elastic would hold up over time or eventually scratch the body of my pens. I'm quite happy Visconti came out with this design which allows each pen to be separated but without any obvious stress.

Hmmm, nice review Brainy. I have been thinking about aquiring one for myself and you have helped nudge me closer to a decision. Thanks.

It looks like a very well made and well designed case... Thanks for the review. Do you happen to know if it comes in any other sizes, and if so, what capacity are they?

And the cost???

There are other sizes. I believe it comes in 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 pen sizes.

As for cost, the 12 pen was 90 EUR inclusive of VAT. Since I'm not in the EU, I don't pay the 20% VAT. Dennis also offers a further 5% discount to FPN users. Check out his website for the cost on the other sizes.

I agree Mr Dennis is really a great gentlemen.

That's what he is.

Coincidentally, I just acquired the two-pen version of this case, and love it. Keeps my two priciest and most loved Visconti pens safe within the wilderness of my handbag. ;)

The case looks wonderful.

My only worry is:

Is there contact between zipper and (top of the) pens?

I'm in doubt between Visconti 3-pen case and the Markiaro (Delta) case which uses a flap.

I did wonder about that too. I have the Delta Markiaro pen case for 3 pens, and I'm fairly certain it is the cause of the scratches on my Montblanc 146..

Very nice review m8. You know what? I couldn't agree more with not giving 10/10 for a review. I dislike reviews that give a full score. Very few pens/accessories ever deserve a full score and I totally second your decision for that. Anyway, it does look very much. I am tempted to get this and your review just really makes me want to give it a go. Unfortunately it looks as though it wouldn't fit a Montblanc 149 sized pen into it. Am I correct?

I was thinking of getting the 3 case version but am wondering if it is too big to fit into my pocket..Looks a bit chunky.

Fountain pens are like weapons. They just make your pocket bleed so much.

A pen case such as this is out of the range I would pay for pen storage. On the other hand I can appeciate the quality and design. I particularly like that the case is the size needed for function and not more. Being in a pen club I've seen a variety of pen cases. Many are huge with inches of (often beautifully decorated) leather casing that do not add capacity but add to the bulk. This is better.

I've also had pen damage from pen cases. It can be very disheartening to put out extra cash to protect your pens and then find scratches inflicted by a label, zipper, or tag. The zipper here looks to be plastic but the placement, right along the edges of the pen cradles on each side, raises concerns.

  • 1 year later...

I would like to thank OP (BrainDrain) for writing the review. I decided to get one after reading the review and has not looked back since.

As my pens are rather large, it is not suitable to be clipped in the chest pocket. I bought a default option: Montblanc Sienna 3-pen case. It served me well but can't really accommodate larger pen with unusual clip design. There were two options that I had considered Franklin-Christoph penvelope and this one. I have seen other pen-enthusiasts in the city having both of them.

I decided to go with 12-case Visconti and can't be happier. So far, it is light and protect the pen from getting in contact with others. It still have good contact with top sleeve portion which I wish it would include more padding. In addition, I felt more attention needed when taking out the pen as it can easily get into contact with the zip.

I really want the smaller one for carrying pens around - it's one of the rare rigid pen cases

The zipper isn't a problem, you lift you pen high enough and it'll clear it

It's also not the scary brass zipper like the one on the Pelikan case

Which smaller one do you mean? I had the two pen Dreamtouch case briefly and it wasn't particular rigid, certainly nowhere near something like the Porsche Design case.

Ouch, that price is painful...

I'm really curious why rigid cases aren't more popular

My franklin christoph is nice, minus the fact that smaller pens get lost inside (can't get a grip on the cap on smaller pens)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
