...and I did this one a while ago and just had not scanned it. So, note I did a comparison at the bottom of Noodler's Black and Aurora. Draw your own conclusions. They were both done with the same type of pen. Noodler's is darker. I was pretty surprised but it was.

Thanks for the review and the comparison, Fabienne!!

So, is it official? Do we have a winner?

Have we concluded that Noodler's Black is the blackest black out there?

For all of the blacks I have, it is the blackest of all. There are some out there I do not have, and some I cannot get a sample of so I will conclude that this is the blackest of all. If someone else wants to take up the mantle and compare Noodler's Black with some obscure and tasty sable contender, be my guest. For now I think it's Black.

I wouldn't call Aurora super-saturated, unless they have come out with that on the label.

It is the perfect black ink for my decades of the hobby. Not to say I don't have 16 other black inks in bottles on desks throughout my life somewhere.

With the black so good, it was a bit disappointing the Aurora Blue had purple in it...

At the time I was playing with it, that is how I would describe it. I am impressed by it and "supersaturated" is meant to be taken more lyrically. I don't think it's a physical possibility!

I've tried just about every black out there and I recently did a comparison of the three darkest I found, and Noodler's Black (since it tends to be a staple). J. Herbin Perle Noire, Aurora Black, Private Reserve Velvet Black, and Noodler's Black. I used the same exact pen on 5 types of paper and Aurora was by far the darkest on all of the paper. With the exception of the 20# copy paper. But on every other paper Aurora was the clear winner followed by Perle Noire which was very closely followed by Velvet Black.

Was your Aurora a sample? Or from a bottle?

I didn't think you meant super-saturated literally, but on here you never know what trouble you can get into.

It hurts when one didn't mean to stir it upin the first place...

There are far more saturated black inks out there than Aurora.

It was a while ago but I suspect it was a sample. I don't think I got a bottle but I could be wrong. This was my result on one paper that I use very frequently so it's going to be a fair test to me. YMMV but this is where I am going to be using it most so it matters to me in this circumstance more.

Not a problem about the supersaturated remark. It's only an ink comparison/review. I try to make them more interesting with more descriptive language otherwise they start blending together. Lots of people swear by Aurora, though and I can't blame them.

Maybe different inks are darker for different people!

I bet that's where the difference is! Noodler's Black is great for lower quality papers, it tends to not spread or feather like the other inks, and the color stays condensed. But on papers where that isn't a problem the other colors seem more highly saturated in my experience.

Oh Good Captain, My Captain....it is safe to use a blue! This is just a mere review of a black. Mere black.

Didn't you see my review of Shocking Blue? It was mighty. The ink was mighty.

Of course I saw your Shocking review, Darling! Wonderful. And the rib about using a blue was purely that - a rib.

Here's a though for you - the 'original' Diamine Blue-Black in a maroon-coloured pen. What do you think?

I don't use black ink, the single bottle Pelikan 4001, one of the two first inks I bought coming back to fountain pens, is adequate. I will buy a bottle of Aurora Black, some day. I do have the blue.

I've always heard great things about it.

In I use so little black ink, it must not be the blackest....just the best. Aurora.

  • 3 years later...

Having used and tried probably 2 dozen or more Black inks over the years, I've settled on Aurora's Black as what I consider the blackest of the Blacks! Next is Pelikan's 4001 Brilliant Black and those are the two Blacks I've used for the past decade. Aurora is my first choice most times when I fill up a pen saving the Pelikan for use in my Pelikans ! :)

I'm disappointed. I thought I had found the blackest of the black inks when I tried Noodler's Old Manhattan Black. I made it my main black ink. Now I'm going to have to get some Aurora Black. I've always heard it was a good ink, just never tried it. I've used a good deal of Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black, among others, over the years. All good black inks, just not, in my humble opinion, as black as Noodler's Old Manhattan Black.

Interesting. I don't have Aurora black and would like to try some but I to my eyes Noodler's black and especially HOD are darker if there can be such a thing.

In my eyes Aurora Black is darker than Noodler's Black (I've used them both, and Noodler's was dark grey in comparison).

On the other hand, my black ink of choice is Sailor Kiwa-Guro, is almost as dark as Aurora, it does not shade and it is very water resistant, but I use it in pens a can disassemble.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
