Hi friends,

A few years ago Deccan pens have introduced "Pelkan" a tribute to Pelikan. Here I am presenting few more companies in India which makes resembling pelikans.

None of these are Pelikans. All

are copies of Pelikans from India.

Flair Mypen, Flair Success.

I am starting with two Flair pens. Flair pen a is Mumbai based company making different types writing instruments for more than 40 years. Their main products are roller balls and ball pens and some limited fountain pens which can be seen occasionally in some stationary shops. I usually buy it when I see as always there will be some thing interesting in their designs.

Here pen at down is a blue marbled old style m 200.

Others are Flair Mypen and Flair Success.

 

Well, the story begins in 1991, 22 years back when I bought the Flair Success from a near by bookstall for 50 Rs. (Yes, 50 Rs

was a big deal at that time for a student.) But bought with out knowing it's a copy of a famous German brand. I think no body in India ( or atleast in Kerala) have heard about Pelikan at that time. We know about Parker, Sheaffer Cross and Hero ( Yes, Hero was the pen we dream about!).

Then why make a copy of an unknown brand instead of copying some of the Parkers?

I dont know. Anyway I way I liked the pen, it was my first piston filler.

I used it for 4-5 years before it developed a crack in the barell - but this pen was not available again and started using Montex and Heros.

Later in 2001 found this pen in some store but with a different name- MyPen. bought for Rs. 60. This pen is working still working

with out any problem.

 

The pistons are not as smooth as a Pelikan, but not hard either.

ABOUT NIBS

Mypen’s And Success’s nibs are larger No 8 and is friction fitted.

Success nib is a smooth one while that of Mypen is somewhat scratchy.

The uppermost pen is an Orchid pen. Down is the Pelikan m 400 and middle is A Montex Regal pen.

 

Montex is also a Mumbai based pen and spare parts company. That means they are making components to other companies. They are in business for more than 40 years.

I searched for Montex Regal for atleast one year. The distributer of our area informed that it has been discontinued. Luckily ( after intense search) I got one as new old stock , lying ignored by the shop owner himself at the corner of his shelf.

But Orchid came as a surprise. I got it from a scrap shop at throw away price.

Look the close ups. It has suffered a lot of hard handling by these scrap people

And still doing its job fantastically. Sure , it is a well built pen.

But actually I don’t know anything about the company. Infact I haven't about such a brand before.

Oliver Metal Pen.

 

Oliver is a Chennai based company making some good quality pens but

Not well known even inside India. They have some interesting designs.

They have recently came out with some acrylic ( ball ) pens with superb finish.

Watch out for their fountain counterpart also.

 

I am calling this pen as ” metal”pen because that’s what the shopkeeper calls it as. . It looks like metal but on handling does not feel as metal. I think it is plastic with a thin layer of metal. The piston is very smooth.

Pierre Cardin Pure Pen.

 

Next in the list is a Pierre Cardin pen. Thinking that how Pierre Cardin became Indian? Well, its made in Mumbai by Flair Writing Intruments. Do not compare it with success and Mypen as they have been discontinued many years back while Pierre Cardin Pure is recent introduction. My box shows it has been packed in 2012. It is the costliest

of the lot but the prettiest with great finish. Its piston is as smooth as Pelikan also.

Its longer than a m400. Upper pen is the Pierre Cardin Pure pen.

Well, Next is a group of pens in stunning colours. The Scriptors.

 

I have not heard of this brand. According to the shop keeper this is a Mumbai based firm.

along with a Marbled blue m 200. Why cant they produce one in Marbled blue

also which is happened to be my favorite colour?

RIGHT MOST IS THE PELIKAN CAP.

 

ARTEX brand from Kolkata is also have some similar designs which I don’t have. If Somebody bothers to post some picture of Artex and also some other similar designs it will be useful.

HI Mohan, Interesting posts, thanks for sharing. I remember the Flair Success very well, I bought it around the same time as you in Pune IIRC.

 

The PC Pure's clip seems to be modelled after the Aurora optima, have a look.

Interesting to see that Romus and Scriptors are very similar.

I have never seen a Camlin Soverirgn before. Can you post the opened picture also?

Hi, I was looking all over for information regarding a Pierre Cardin fountain pen I have, and came across this thread. I do not have pictures with me right now. My Pierre Cardin is all black, with a golden clip. The top of the cap looks like the Oliver's top while the clip is like the one on the Pierre Cardin in the photo above.

 

Now my problem is that the piston has become very stiff. In fact, its so hard that I sometimes fear I shall break the pen if I twist harder. Can anyone help me with information regarding the piston mechanism? Is this a clutchless design that can simply be unscrewed from the rear? Or do I need a tool to remove it? Otherwise, is there someone in Mumbai to whom I can take this pen to get it sorted?

 

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
