Sailor Bung Box Azure Ocean Blue

A while ago, a long long while, I asked the inestimable Sam_Capote, who I had previously assumed owned every ink under the sun if he had tried out Bung Box inks made by Sailor. He had never heard of the inks and proceeded to go through hell and high water working with a forwarding service to get them to him. He very nicely put up some samples, which after almost a year, I consulted before I finally got some of the inks for myself.

Instead of going with a forwarding service, I asked cool-japan on ebay about it, the amazing guy who has been selling me all the Kobe inks I have reviewed recently.

This was a really interesting ink to use. From the first line, I was confused - it isn't a straight, normal blue. There is something odd about it; shifting green undertones, perhaps. What I do know for certain is that this ink has that extra something that makes it fun to look at while you're writing.

It looks great on all papers, but sheens more on more absorbent paper and shades more on CF paper.

The shading is nice too, but since the colour difference isn't as dramatic as Emerald, the shading is more subtle. Which is nice in this instance, given the complicated nature of the colour itself.

The really notable thing here is the DRY TIME. 3.5 seconds, seriously. Lefties, take note!

The only downside is the price. When I asked cool-japan why he didn't normally stock the inks, he told me it was because he couldn't get as good a price for the Bung Box inks as he was getting for the Kobe ones, and he didn't think anyone would want to pay $40 USD for a 50 mL bottle of ink. Considering the shipping was free and there were no customs charges, I didn't feel it was painfully expensive. But I enjoyed this ink a lot, so I didn't mind paying for it. :)

Very pretty.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I wonder if I should toss out all my inks, buy all of the Bungs and be done with it? Thanks for the review, I really wish these were easier to get here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
