A while ago, a long long while, I asked the inestimable Sam_Capote, who I had previously assumed owned every ink under the sun if he had tried out Bung Box inks made by Sailor. He had never heard of the inks and proceeded to go through hell and high water working with a forwarding service to get them to him. He very nicely put up some samples, which after almost a year, I consulted before I finally got some of the inks for myself.

 

Instead of going with a forwarding service, I asked cool-japan on ebay about it, the amazing guy who has been selling me all the Kobe inks I have reviewed recently.

I really like this ink. It's a gorgeous colour that looks great on all paper and behaves very well.

The shading is gorgeous ...

The only downside is the price. When I asked cool-japan why he didn't normally stock the inks, he told me it was because he couldn't get as good a price for the Bung Box inks as he was getting for the Kobe ones, and he didn't think anyone would want to pay $40 USD for a 50 mL bottle of ink. Considering the shipping was free and there were no customs charges, I didn't feel it was painfully expensive, especially because I really like this colour.

Nice ink and a good review. It reminds me of R&K Verdigris so I'll stick to that - especially because of the price.

Wow - stunning. This color is as close to Parker Penman Emerald as I have seen.

A belated thanks for the great review, saskia. I like the look of this ink quite a bit, but I don't see Bung Box Emerald listed anymore? Is the current Bung Box Norwegian Wood the same ink with a different name, or has the formulation changed?

 

Yes, this ink is more expensive than most, currently $43 at Vannes. On the other hand, I spent a number of years on my photography hobby and making prints. The Epson ink cartridges I was using at the time for my photo printer cost $13 for 13ml (and you needed 8 of them for a full load). That's roughly the same $1 per ml as the Bung Box inks. I'm sure the Bung Box bottle will last me much much longer than the Epson carts did :-)

Yep! I call it emerald because it says emerald on the bottle (I think? Or at least mine did), but the image on the bottle is a forest. I am confident that even at the time it was called "forest emerald; or something like that. :)

 

I do love it, but I haven't used it in a while. Maybe it time to dig it out for my next fill!

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
