New Bulk Filler Demonstrator "evaluation" Prototype

Hi all!
Below 2 pictures of a "test" demonstrator bulk filler prototype I just finished.
I don' expect CONID will produce this version as such, too much time consuming hand work !
I''ve milled 8 length wise grooves in the body , 1.8 mm wide and 0.8 mm deep.
The grooves are filled with liquid celluloid 5 applications, aiming to avoid enclosure of air bubbles.
The acetone needs to be evaporated before the next layer can be applied, so it takes 'about 7 hours between each layer.
And even doing so i still experienced small air bubbles enclosures ....
It seems that I need probably 10 applications and/ or using a less viscous solution .....
The adhesion of the celluloid is perfect, and this is already a good point!
Visually I think using 9 grooves with a width of 1.5 mm will be better.
In doing so the grooves are not at 180 °, and does not see the opposite groove when looking trough the barrel
Reducing the inlay width to 1.5 mm will make the pen looking longer and more elegant I think....?
Finally I would like to find standard "strips" of celluloid (or another hard black plastic?) With a width of 1.5 mm and 1 mm thick to gleu in the grooves and then turning the excessive material off on the lathe.
Any suggestions in finding such standard hard black "strips" ??
Thank in advance for your suggestions and comments!
Regards, Francis

hi Francis

I can't advise you on the celluloid, but ... what a stunning pen! I think it is beautiful, the stripes gives it a slender look. Absolutely gorgeous.

If is for sale I'm very interested. :D :D :D

Looks great Francis. How does this influence structural integrity?

Being a-technical I can't help you on the technical aspects.

I believe there's a Chinese company that makes mother of pearl of celluloid, and that it's available in sheets. If one were to cut 1.5mm strips off the sheet and glue the strips into a pen, the end result would look a lot raden.

If you're just looking for something to experiment with, here is an Ebay listing.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Celluloid-Sheet-For-Making-Guitar-Picks-Plain-Black-Listing-1-Lot-Q-A-/300897222687?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item460edf401f

Fairly reasonable price, questionable quality (just judging from the description).

Otherwise here is a site from a quick Google check.

http://www.celluloid.com.cn/

Found several other places via Google. Most selling to luthiers. Those that aren't looked like they had significant minimum quantities (150kg for example), maybe not so handy for prototype work.

Hope it helps.

Hi D.ick,

Sorry i've forgot to answer your question...

Structural integrity is surely not at stake, solid as a rock !

  • 2 weeks later...

Really nice! it reminds me of the window in the MB149, but this one is actually functional! can hardly see in the 149.

Ahhh I wonder if you could make the cut-out windows in the shape of the art deco pattern on the Chrysler building in NYC?

Even this would be possible today, ....... at least when you would agree paying 1500 € extra ! :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
