Shawn is the lathe a CNC? What size is it 8x? or larger?

Beautiful pens. Your photography brings out their beauty.

Congrats on the new Lathe Shawn, I am considering upgrading my metal lathe (an old Logan type) and would really like to hear what you think of this lathe...I live pretty close to Grizzly so I am curious to hear actual user comments!

That lathe looks like a beast. Unless it's smaller than it looks in that photo it would take quite the bench to support that "bench top" lathe.

Can't wait to see what you can do with those #8 nibs!

Me too! biggrin.gif

I think the #8 nibs would be good match for your super over sized pens.

It is bigger than it looks and comes with the stand. The 220 line has already been installed. That was quite a bit cheaper than I expected thankfully.

Now I just have to call and reorder the lathe b/c of $500 limits on my bank card! Ugh! I had it sorted, but Grizzly didn't charge me right away, they waited until about three days ago.

I've got a few #8 nibs in recently, but I'll have to make a custom tap for them once the lathe comes in. :) I'll be able to make my own taps! How cool is that!? :D

Hi Shawn,

Congratulations on your new lathe, looks great !!

Is the gearbox set up for inch and metric threading, or do you have the change gears for either of them?

Well hello there new lathe friend! I'm pretty uneducated when it comes to the different workings of more advanced lathes but I will say this, that thing looks wicked awesome. I bet once you get it all set up and all that, just looking at that bad boy will inspire you to take your pen turning game to a whole new level.

Congrats! Impressive lathe, keep on keepin on.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
