Ooh. This is tough. Hard to narrow it down to just five; but here, in no particular order

Noodler's Kung Te Cheng

Pharmacist's Turkish Night

Noodler's Manhattan Blue

De Atramentis Tchaikowsky (may be relabeled Silver Grey)

De Atramentis Rose

Very close also-rans:

Noodlers' North African Violet

Noodler's Liberty's Elysium (which used to be my favorite blue until I found Manhattan Blue)

Diamine Denim

Noodler's Shah's Rose

Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses

Private Reserve Rose Rage

J Herbin Rouge Hematite

Parker vintage Quink Brown

Pharmacist's Urkundentinte

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

My favorite inks change, but overall I would say:

Parker Penman Saphire Blue

Sailor Yama Dori

Noodler's Old Manhattan Black

MB Irish Green

Binder's Burgundy

Noodler's Galileo Manuscript Brown

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

I find it very hard to make a choice, so many inks that I like.

  • Noodler's Kung Te-Cheng
  • Noodler's El Lawrence
  • Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo
  • Diamine Ancient Copper
  • R&K Alt Goldgrün

And right now, I want to substitute one of those inks for Akkerman Oranje Boven...

En welke gaat het worden?

That's a hard one.....make up your mind yet?

I don't have Oranje Boven....but i love the Akkerman's i have.....and the bottle is fantastic!

Montblanc Royal Blue

Montblanc Mystery Black

Montblanc Irish Green

Waterman Violette

P.W. Akkerman China Town Red

It's a combination of colour tone plus excellent flow in my pens. All of these inks measure up on both.

Ideally I would like to have a blue-black on that list but am still seeking a satisfactory blue-black among today's offerings. In my school days long ago just about any blue-black was fine--actually blue-black--but today's are all over the place. Next on the list to try, Pilot Iroshizuku Shin-kai.

Maybe you could mix yourself the perfect blue/black?

I have Akkerman's Haags rood pluche and i love it....but China town red is on my wish list....

Thanks for the suggestion. Mixing my own blue-blacks hasn't worked too well for me so far as the texture is somehow altered. Sometime I may try again.

Re Akkerman's China Town Red, I hope you do get some. It's cheerfulness n a bottle. It has a drop of orange in it that makes it pop like no other red!

Happiness is a real Montblanc...

And it is difficult to scan, in reality it is not that red.

And it tends to crud the nib (as other Orange Diamine inks.... Diamine most likely manufactures the Akkerman inks)

I'm surprised that Florida Blue only got mentioned once and Baystate Blue hasn't been mentioned at all so far.

The top 5 of the inks I actually have or had:

1. Diamine Red Dragon

2. Diamine Majestic Blue

3. Noodler's Purple Martin

4. J. Herbin Vert Empire

5. Lamy Blue, which I don't find particularly beautiful, but it's so very reliable and well behaved and therefore perfect when testing pens before modifying them

Nah, I'll keep them and add Oranje Boven as an extra.

I have several Akkerman's inks, love the bottles (beautiful and practical) and the inks. Hopjesbruin is another favorite of mine.

Always subject to change, but for today, these will do.

Montblanc Racing Green

Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses

Diamine Mediterranean Blue

Stipula Verde Muschiato

Caran d'Ache Storm

Noodler;'s Black Swans are lovely and Storm by Caran'd ache is so vibrant (i think it is discontinued)

True, Storm is discontinued, but I think you can still get it at some stores.

A good replacement for Storm is Akkerman Voorhout Violet or Diamine Grape, they are very similar.

I already compared the 3 inks in another thread, might be interesting for some of you:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
