Are You A Hoarder?

The other day as I tried to stuff yet another writing pad into a drawer already full of stationery, it came to me: I'm a hoarder. And as is the case with many hoarders, I can point to an incident in my past that put me on this slippery slope.

Years ago I used lovely pale blue stationery with a light linen finish made by Eaton's (Canadian FPN members of a certain age will remember this venerable department store). It was A4 size and came with matching envelopes, all very reasonably priced. When I was nearly finished with one pad, I'd go buy another. Maybe even two if I was feeling particularly rich. Then one day the pads were missing from their shelf, and I was directed to a "Sale - Discontinued" table where a stack of pads and envelopes sat forlornly. "We're not carrying it any more," the sales clerk told me. "There's not much interest in it anymore."

I bough the whole remaining supply and scuttled home like Scrooge, bent protectively over my loot and muttering at anyone who glanced my way. A hoarder was born. Of course my supply eventually ran out, and I found other delicious substitutes; G. Lalo, Clairefontaine, Pollen, and others. But now I feel compelled to buy in quantity and I do. If I see Clairefontaine in stock (A4 and A5!!) I try to leave one or two pads for someone else; when I come back from from family visits to England there is often more Basildon Bond in my suitcase than clothing, especially if it's airmail paper. I write a lot of letters - but even I am shocked to see how much I've accumulated.

I'm pretty sure from some posts I've seen that I am not alone in this affliction. What's your stationery hoarding story?

I've probably got 50 different notebooks- different companies and styles, all bought searching for The One. My wife says I'm crazy, so I guess that's a 'yes.'

I tend to buy multiples if I find something I like. I have over 300 notebooks and pads of various sizes, at my age probably a life supply. Yet I will buy more when I see something I like or something new to try. But I am not a hoarder - no way - shut up!!!!!!

 true! I'll just keep the rest of the stash at my parents... That way, technically, I'm safe, right? Right?!

Absolutely correct. It's only what others can see that counts. Secreting your stash over several sites is a well know stationery addicts tactic.

I am like many of you and my name is Rob and I like pens. Yes I am a pen collector and stationary hoarder. I have 4 folios for ruled paper pads, and rather than a single moleskine, I now have 3 in use, all my past ones saved, and at lest 5 ready for future use. I have not one bottle of ink but 9.

At one point in the past I used 3 agenda diaries based upon my mood to filofax, or daytimer versus priority manage. I am back to one system.

I do not buy loose paper in bulk any more as my shelves are full and my folios also full.

I am aware I have a distinct hobby and I am thankful for this my support group.

Mags

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

Good grief, I thought I'd invented that strategy...that's why I can't post a photo - way too many locations. Found two notebooks in my sock drawer the other day, no lie.

Oh... the loose old paper... I've found a drawer full of it when moving... kept it at my parents, apparently my better half does not understand the need for so many "dead trees".

Of course I'm not a hoarder. Our house is just full of stuff that I might need one day.

I'm probably modest when it comes to some of the other venerable collectors here (better word than 'hoarder' I think ;) However I'm looking over the Original Crown Mill Pure Cotton, the onionskin, the L!FE Bank Paper, the Smythson's blue, the G. Lalo, the Diane de Poitiers, the assorted Strathmore linen and laid paper and envelopes from Jam Paper, the Crane's monarch sheets and envelopes...and THEN there's the notebooks...

Yes, I think "collector" is a much better term for this aesthetic habit. Enjoy!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
