Beyond A Wet Noodle? Lol!

Recommended Posts

This is a pen that I'm borrowing from a friend...I know I'm not the most well-experienced guy, but this wet noodle is beyond a wet noodle. I feel like I'm writing with a metal paintbrush. It's an old Conklin. Wow, I have a couple of wet noodles, but this is in another class!!!

On my lunch break and hurriedly did this for the heck of it. I can't put the thing down!!!!!!!! Sorry for the crummy photography.

Putting on my pedantic hat...The scrolly thing is a flourish. :P

I'm trying to learn how to do them too, and they are difficult! If you want to learn what to do with flourishes, pick up a copy of "Calligraphic Flourishing" by Bill Hildebrandt.

Actually, that one "flourishy" lookin' thing, is the only one thing I know how to do.

Heck, I just made that up, I wish I knew how to do more of that. I copied the underline zig-zag thing from something I looked at. It seems that is a fairly common flourish because I've seen it often. I had to turn the page sideways to get the flexes in the right place. It's not very good I know; I'm trying to teach myself. I look at Caliken's stuff and think, wow, that guy has really got it goin' on. Of course he is literally a world class calligrapher, but still amazing.

Manny, you also freak me out with that flexy script stuff you always do. I have plenty of things to work on...I'm thinking maybe I should try to actually memorize a textbook hand. Instead of all these bits and pieces and 'doing my own thing', you know?

I will try to find out more about that pen from him. I don't know much about it except that its an old BCHR Conklin with a nib from hell. LOL! Or I should say a nib from heaven. Unbelievably fun to write with something like that.

Wow, beautiful!! How amazing. Any idea what kind of Conklin it was, and did he modify it?

Awww man, thank you for saying that. That means a lot, really.

Gonna try to find out more for you, he didn't tell me anything about it, just told me he thought I would enjoy it, and lent it over. He knew I'd be amazed though, I could tell it was gonna be swweeeet! I have a bunch of questions to ask about it too...such as...where can I get one of doze tangs. (that is swamp talk for "those things) LOL! I wish I knew how to use it better and show it off better. The pen is light-years ahead of a hack-writer like me, that's for sure!

Ha...don't EVEN go there, Mister GClef...I saw one of those invitations with my own eyes. And I've seen that astounding flexy (as well as non-flexy) writing of yours. Beautiful work! I can't compete with that, bro. But thanks for saying it all the same...gives my inferiority complex a bit of a boost. :vbg:

Shhhheeeeeeesh! That'll give ya somethin' to shoot at, won't it. hahaha. Or check this out if you haven't seen it already. A street calligrapher working with a magic marker. Makes me want to stab myself in the eye with my sharpest nib.

Schin, he said that he did not modify it, it is stock just as he got it. I will look at it tomorrow to see if it has some identifying marks or model numbers. It's BCHR as you know, and it writes so flawlessly. That pen is in such good condition, it could have been manufactured a few months ago. I mean the style is vintage (and this is an old vintage pen), but condition-wise it is just amazing. One of those pens that you barely flex and it just responds instantly and dramatically. Oh the joy.... :puddle:

This is attractive, accomplished designing, but in the interest of this forum, it should be pointed out that the lettering on the prints comprises computer fonts and not handwriting. I suspect that the overall effects are more the result of considerable computer skill, rather than ability with the pen.

I wrote this in the style of the flourished lettering in The Universal Penman.

Oh my lord!!! hahahahaha.... All I can do is giggle when I see something THAT good. Totally Astounding. I'm late for work and I have to head out, but I have a lot more comments about this. Lordy, is there anything that you "can't do"? After work I'll post more comments about this...and I have a question or two as well if I may. Getting advice from Ken Fraser. Wow...what an opportunity. I'll try to be brief though. Gotta run for now, but when I get home from work I have some easy questions for ya. Thank you Ken. Seriously!

In that, you would be wrong. Although the print was commercially printed, Seb Lester hand-lettered the print before having it professionally printed. If you look through his photostream, which I linked to in another thread, you will see several pictures in which he was practicing the design for the print. You will also notice that he changed the design and practiced the flourishes multiple times before he came up with a finished product. It only takes one look through his online album to realize that the guy is a talented calligrapher, and I believe the print is the result of considerable ability with the pen AND some computer skill, rather than one or the other.

Yes, yes...the link after your link to the photostream shows him actually writing it. Amazing!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
