A new year and a new round of pen showsthumbup.gif First one up is the Southwest Pen Show at the Bristol Hilton hotel on Sunday 10th. February, kicks off at 10:00am. Plenty of low cost parking, its free if you park on the industrial estate! There will be plenty of pens vintage and modern, plenty of free advice on repairs, collecting and all things pen. A really nice laid back show ideal for first timers but still more pens than you can get your head around.

Evening,

It looks like I am a definite for the show and I know I can't make the meal after as I would miss my flight. That said I have been saving up and am all excited.

Well, the NEXT one had better be on the 2nd Feb '14, as I have been advised!

My flights, hotel and transport are all booked and paid-for ... after a show-deprived year, I am in need of it :)

I don't know what you think is 'reasonable' these days, but I got a double B&B with free parking, at the Hilton itself for about GBP60, which I thought very reasonable.

I doubt, however, that this deal is still available.

There is a rather rudimentary B&B a few mins walk away ...can't recall the name, but it had the word "Well" in its title, I think. I am reluctant to give it an unreserved recommendation, but it was cheap(er)!

You could try the Lodge on the Park http://www.lodgeonthepark.co.uk/ this is where we will be staying. We've stayed at the Lodge a couple of times before for the show and never been disappointed. An added plus is that its opposite the Aztec where we tend to meet up for dinner and drinks on Saturday night.

Is the date 2nd February 2014 as rogerb hopes it is?

It is Sunday 2nd. February 2014 unless you want to come the week before (know in pendom as doing a Roger!) - just kidding - sorry Roger B.

Just booked my room @ £58. Not a bad price and not too far to walk (stagger!) after a pleasant evening at the Aztec. :)

Just to be clear, "The meal", Fiona, will be on the Sat night BEFORE the show, which is on Sunday.... hope you can make it.

Have all of the dates been set for the 2014 Pen Shows? The show in Bristol is a bit of a long way off so maybe the Cambridge show or even the one in Lichfield would be better to go to.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
