New Cs Ink Range

RMN

Recommended Posts

Today I received an email from Mary Burke.

Conway Stewart has launched a new range of inks.

Judging from the bottle they are Diamine inks.

Now looking at them I see Bodmin Jet Black, but on my screen there is a definite blue tint under it. It looks more like a deep black-blue and reminds me of our FPN van Gogh Starry Night.

So I have a question to Mary: Is that Bodmin indeed blue-ish or is it a real black and is the blue on my screen the product of bad calibration of my screen?

I've seen a similar e-mail and notification. By the name of each ink I'd suggest (but of course would need confirmation) that these CS inks were just branding or merchandising 'hype' of existing inks. I underline the clues.

Bodmin Jet Black, St. Blazey Classic Red, Kingsand Ochre, Tamar Royal Blue, Tavy Denim or Edgcumbe Lavender -- all are non-toxic which results in a free flowing ink to enhance your writing pleasure.

I rest my case, for once.

Certainly, I can read, too. But in the case of jet black (whatever jet actually is) the looks in the picture on my screen give a hint of blue. So I would like to hear from someone who has seen the actual colour if that is correct or not.

An article in the December issue of Pen World says that these inks are made by Diamine and are newly designed inks for Conway Stewart.

The mailing clearly states it's Diamine ink:

We chose to work with Diamine because of their rich English heritage. Manufacturers since 1864, Diamine Ink has successfully incorporated the traditional methods and formulas for ink production which are water based, perfect for new and vintage fountain pens.

Since the colours mentioned are the same as the names of existing Diamine inks i think they are repackaged Diamine inks, not unique colours for CS. The Jet Black looks a bit blue but screenshots can be deceiving. A shame they didn't add a green ink. Diamine makes some of the nicest green inks.

Probably they are quite happy with the existing CS-green ink...

That's exactly what I thought...where's the green?

Strange indeed. CS had two green inks in their old lineup if i'm correct and Diamine greens inks are the inks i use most these days (Evergreen, Sherwood Forest and sometime Green/Black).

Another theory about the Bodmin Jet Black ink is that it's not Diamine Jet Black but actually Diamine Eclipse. Eclipse is a very dark blue which looks black.

My guess would be that the CS inks use slightly different recipies than the Diamine branded inks - very similar without being identical.

I made the mistake of buying a CS ink and it was some sort of blue. Absolutely awful and I gave it away within a few days. It was nothing like a Diamine ink which I normally like.

That was probably the old ink.

The new ink has not hit the sores yet. My regular shop has no listing yet of the new inks.

I am seldom enthousiastic about plain blue inks. But the CS green was famous.

Jet is a hard compact variation of lignite coal and is considered a semi precious stone.

Surprised they are still making inks when they have a partnership with Diamine who have a whole range of colours.

They don't technically make the inks. It's no secret that Diamine makes them for them, and they just slap a label on them. I think my CS ink bottle even says that it's made by Diamine, if I remember right.

Several on-line stores seem to be running short (discontinuing?) these CS inks. Soon, I'll pick up a bottle of Kingsand at FPH in NYC to complete my set of six. The five I have are unremarkable, but well-behaved and reliable, like the Diamine products they are. I see no undertones of blue in the Bodmin--just a good, solid black that, like many others, is slightly less intense than Aurora. My favorite is the old CS green--also getting hard to find...and not cheap for a 30 ml bottle...

Ive looked online and it would seem that the cost of the 80 ml of Diamine ink is £5.65 and the 80 ml of Conway Stewart ink is £6.49. Can't really see the point of paying an extra 84p to have the Conway Stewart name on the label and box.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
