Well... as I said before,  I think it's not astonishing that a magazine would do some "favours" to its advertisers. It keeps the cash coming.

If you want to see the bright side of it, it may be a tad annoying to see the same faces/brands praised all the time, but it allows the publication to bring you the other content that is more interesting.

Unfortunately there is little room left for interesting material in Stylus. <_<

But I also stopped buying PenWorld because it was mostly sizzle without alot of good articles. It's the same cost as a bottle of ink and I would feel better with a bottle every two months than the magazines.

True... both my subscriptions to Stylus and PenWorld are free (one from RS and one from the LA show), so may be that's why I'm less harsh.

On the other hand, if your wife reads any "woman magazines", you'll see that both PW and Stylus still seem refreshingly ad-free compared to those

I don't know whether I would have a subscription if mine wasn't given for free, but I find there to be a few good articles in every issue. Sure, I would love it if all the articles were on old pens, but I am probably not the average subscriber. Stylus has to cater to different tastes if they want enough people to subscribe. Some people actually enjoy reading about the latest Omas pen or the latest Grayson Tighe. And they might do more articles for them because of their advertisements, but Stylus needs the money. If you were to give a lot of money to them every year, I bet they would write about whatever you wanted. If you want a completely unbiased magazine, get consumer reports, but don't expect a decent article on fountain pens.

Also, Stylus seems to be pretty welcome to people who want to write an article for the magazine. So you might even have the opportunity to make the magazine better yourself.

Once again I have nothing against Stylus and I am not so stupid to think that a magazine is lily white with respect to courting ad clients ( please respect my intellegence at least that much ;) ). But to consistently bring up the same manufacturers over and over leads me to think that maybe they have a small ad base.

In the grand scheme of life I got my Stylus subscription free & I don't give a rats bottom what they publish.

Maybe I'll send them a copy of my Gaudi article that got turned down by Penworld and Stylophiles.

Good point. I 'debone' the first 1/4 of GQ just to get rid of the clothing ads.

Sorry guys I can't even for a second understand the concern.

a. The market of users who would shell out $9 at the newstand or $6 subscription is undoubtedly small. The fact that you get can get a well made glossy like that, means that they probably are heavily reliant on advertising, and that means the content may be influenced to help promote the advertisers. Sorry guys, that's the way it is in this "niche" market of ours. If you don't like it, don't buy the mag.

b. Shoot, the cover on my wife's "Shape" magazine is more pornographic than the Tighe pen. once again, freewill gives you the option to rip out the page, don't buy the mag, whatever. Nowhere is it a fundamental human right to be able to buy something that you find offensinve and at the same time be spared from having it be offensive to you.

Sorry for the rant guys, I just don't understand the complaint.

Well I just got the latest edition of Stylus and I CAN leave it around the house. Maybe this whole thread and the others that bloomed on other sites were not understandable. There seems that there has been a shift, maybe it is just an imaginary shift, but not a single naked pen to be found ( OK there is one but it a rather small photo half way through the multiple page tighe article.

And as a side not I don't mind that Stylus is chock full of pen ads. Heck that the only way I get to see most of the new pens as there isn't a pen store nearby. Maybe I just don't like pretending that most of the articles within are anything but long format ads for a particular manufacturer. As I said before I realize that this occurs and hey whatever they publish is fine by me.

I know I saw one on page 44 but where is the other one. There is one looking demure early in the tighe article but she is covered enough for me not to consider her naked ;)

Technically, the one on p.44 is not naked. More topless :) There is a naked lady on p.40, on the Angel Ivory pen. Of course, it is much more tastefully rendered, in my opinion.

Man, I'm not subscribing to the right magazines. Magazines on stuff like amateur radio, trapshooting, wine etc. aren't this stimulating. B) I gotta get some of these pen?? magazines going; those with the nekid ladies in them!

If you really want to get technical we cannot see the bottom half of the lady on pg. 40 and she is covered by her arm as well. So she may be wearing a bathing suit and not be naked at all.;)

As for 44 the topless thing is a egyptian deity so naked lady might not be an appropriate answer. So I should retract my post farther up in the thread.

Read the rest of the thread and you'll see that I am really not all that thrilled with having naked people on pens.

This is my own opinion and you have every right to another opinion

I really don't expect the publisher to change since it is not a fundamental human right to be able to buy something that you find offensive and at the same time be spared from having it be offensive to you. :bonk:

YMMV

Well, I did read the thread before I posted. What's the big deal? I didn't imply that you were thrilled with having naked people on pens.

Yup, obvious to all I would think.

Well, it took me some time to wade through your syntactical construction above, but I think I understand what you mean and I think we're in agreement.

But, please understand that I was quoting Denis, not you, and responding to Denis' pinpointing of the locations and description of the degree of undress. I meant to be frivolous and jocular, and was not being judgmental in any way, but you seem to have had a nerve disturbed and why by me is a mystery to me. :( C'est la vie mon ami. /:)

Unfortunately Roger, they are only metal and precious resin ladies

That said, I heard there is a new French translation of the "1001 Nights" which I need to hunt. If it is anywhere close to the original text (unlike the old translations), that could make for some interesting reading :D

Drat! Just my luck.

1001 Nights, eh? In any translation that is some of the bawdiest literature ever!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
