Serious Pen there!

Many thanks; I could't believe they had it this early at the MB Palazzo Boutique.

Lovely samples!

Do any of these brown inks have sheen?

Just curious!

p-

Thanks! No sheen, sorry, but lots of shading (I even looked at the Levenger paper again).

Try 'em, they'll brighten any Winter!

Hi,

Always nice to see such a gathering!

I am surprised that the Herbin CdB is so very Grey - I do wonder if the colour changed due to [possible] changes to formula and/or manufacturing methods.

Bye,

I know, that surprised me too; maybe I have to shake it more and do that again ;)

Mine, too! In that order, I think. Well, it's a tight race between the Tsukushi and the Cafe des Iles.

Hi,

Since taking-up hula dancing, I find the need to "shake it more and do that again" arises less often.

However, in the astounding 'Sepia Toned Ink Comparison' of 32 inks by dcpritch, LINK, the samples of HCdB were much the same as you've shown, which were subsequently deemed 'off', (Post №6+), and at variance to a previous well-depicted sample: LINK.

That "LINK" depicts a far darker ink; could the scans be underexposed? If two independent swabs come up with what's essentially gray for Cafe des Iles, instead of a darker "motor oil" type of color, then that seems to be the norm, right?

Hi,

I went back to some old notes that indicated I'd planned to try some HCdB, but as there was some concern about the stability of the ink, and the 'wobble' in its colour, I decided to delay that pleasure.

HCdB was reformulated in 2009, and perhaps again as a result of changes to EU regulations.

Over time, there were various samples of HCdB posted, and discussion about the 'elusive' nature of the colour - which is often the case when trying to pin down a subtle ink that is also sensitive to pen+paper+technique.

Likely I'm still a bit touchy after the Omas Blue fiasco, where the magnificent 'black box' OMAS Blue start off so well, only to wander off track and eventually be replaced.

I agree that the two most recent well-depicted examples of HCdB can be used as a basis for determining what to expect in current bottles.

It seems that HCdB has crossed-over to the Greys, and no amount of hula dancing can entice it back the Brown clan. :(

Thanks so much for your confirmation, Sandy; this is indeed a sad day that we have lost a brown :(

I know my first bottle of this was the darker "motor oil" shade that Ghost Plane had accurately described; I'm wondering what happened.

And now for the hula dancing:

What a beautiful fountain pen and great inks.

Thanks so much; I think my favorites are Tsukushi and Cafe; guess my coffee addiction has not given way to tea yet.

I like the pen the best ....

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
