Private Reserve Ebony Blue

Here's my review of Private Reserve's Ebony Blue ink. I love it! Great shading and even better sheening. Well behaved and affordable.

I'll take some pics of the sheen and post them tomorrow, though you can actually see it a bit in the scans.

Sorry, but I don't have a specific dilution ratio for the above example. When the pen runs out of ink I suck up a bit of clean water and see what I get. It usually turns out great.

mhphoto, your reviews really showcase an ink's capabilities. Bravo! :clap1:

This is an odd one. A lot of greenish teal. I have a bottle of PR Ebony Green, and the two are distinct enough, but I was expecting more of a blue-black from Ebony Blue. This looks somewhat similar to pharmacist's Turkish Night once dry and oxidized. Looks nice and it appears to resist water decently.

Great review! I'll have to get this one too. For 'Flow', you gave it a 3 out of 5. Is it as wet as Ebony Green and Ebony Purple? I'd give both of those a 5 out of 5!

mhphoto, thanks for a great review.

I have very few full bottles of ink but Ebony Blue is one of them. I actually ordered it by mistake but have been very happy that I did. Really a well behaved ink in any pen I have tried it. The diluted color is beautiful.

Wow, those 'sheen shots' are fantastic!

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

One of my favorite inks! Nice review, and I agree, those shots showing the sheen of the ink are incredible.

Has anyone done a comparison of this ink to PR's Blue Suede? I haven't used it lately but my recollection is that it also is a nice teal color. I couldn't find anything in the Comparison forum.

Great review, this is one of my "staple" inks I find myself coming to over and over.

I've the Ebony Purple and Ebony Green which I do like but hardly use. I've been contented with other blue blacks which I tend to use regularly, but I may just get this one to complete the ebony set...

From the scans it seems like a really interesting colour.

Thanks for the (visually) informative review

  • 1 year later...

Thanks so much for the review! I have bought this ink for some time and today I finally loaded it in my newly purchased Namiki Elabo (SF nib) and I immediately fell in love with the ink and the pen!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
