Ink mixes that didn't work

I mixed some Heberin blue scented with some waterman purple... it was darker but didn't seem to flow as smoothly. I'd not recommend it to be honest.

I mixed my hero washable blue ink with a little bit if private reserve velvet black, it looked really nice but when I flushed the pen out, blots of ink came out so I stopped doing that

Noodler's North African Violet + Noodler's Firefly = Precipitate highway. The resulting purple precipitate flakes hate everything they touch :)

Noodler's Red and Noodler's Dragon's Napalm.

It makes some kind of gas, and made a pen vomit all over the storage container. Gas kept coming out of the vial until it eventually stopped (as far as I can tell).

I *think* the Red was reacting with the fluorescent chartreuse in the Dragon's Napalm, but I don't know yet. Apparently in the vial, the chartreuse ran out or something.

Also, Noodler's Shah's Rose (or any other brands of that chemical) and any type of black at all. Warm black, cool black, any kind, any amount. If you get even a molecule (minor exaggeration) of any sort of black in there, it turns into a nasty, dusty color. Plus, Shah's Rose lightens royal blue (Pelikan 4001 Violet is exactly this mixture). Noodler's Saguaro Wine doesn't lighten royal blue, and gets along with blacks just fine.

Cape Cod Cranberry and anything non baystate. You can see the chunks. I just had to try it (in a small container of course).

PR DC Supershow Blue with Noodlers Green Marine - deposits a gray-black film on the (glass) bottle I mixed them in that would not come off with any of several detergents, washing soda, bleach, methanol, isopropanol, acetone, hexane, THF, NMP, or butyrolactone. Certainly don't want that to happen in your pen, although once the precipitation is complete the mix writes fine (!).

It's called Dragon NAPALM for a reason, I guess.

Baystate Blue and anything... I tried:

Pelikan blue

Pelikan blue-black

Noodler's black

Noodler's Nikita Red

And a couple of others, to be fair, Nathan stated that Baystate colors can only be mixed with other Baystate colors... But I had to see for myself!

There is no point to mixing Baytate Blue and Baystate Cranberry, because Baystate Grape is already made!

Fortunately I did it in separate containers, and in all cases it seemed to turn into ugly concrete....

It makes little tiny globlets. Not a huge deal, but I don't think you'd want that.

Do NOT mix Omas Sepia with Sheaffer Skrip Purple.

I wasn't exactly mixing the two inks. I was transferring inks into small refill bottles that I can keep inside a tin can in the office, and I did use one dropper tool for each ink, but when I got to the Sheaffer transfer, I accidentally picked up not a fresh dropper but one that had a few drops of Omas Sepia in it.

I sucked up the Sheaffer with the dropper tool, but when I lifted the dropper from the bottle, a soft and solid gunk that was about two inches long was hanging over the tip of the dropper.

I just emptied the entire dropper and its contents into the wastebasket, and checked the Sheaffer bottle for gunk. Luckily, I found none there. Whew!

Sounds like it had the flu! :ltcapd: You did get lucky - glad you didn't ruin the Sheaffer bottle!

1 part visconti green to 4/5 Herbin Éclat de Saphir. Produced a beautiful teal, which, however, clogged the pen (a tuned Lamy Logo, which is anything but dry) the day after filling. I've bought Waterman Blue-black//Teal in order to compensate.

Noodler's North African Violet + Namiki Blue. Frothy at first, nothing violent, but next day has a precipitate.

Pilot Blue and Waterman Florida Blue/Serenite

Wonderful flow at first, but after a while (4 hours) the bottle had ink bubbles, and i mean no ink just a bottle with bubbles. Even worse it clogged my tuned pilot custom 92

I tried mixing J. Herbin Gris Nuage (5 parts) with Waterman black (1 part) (this was obtained from old cartridges).

The result was a beautiful dark gray (Gris Nuage is too light for my taste), but unfortunately the ink apparently wants to go out of the pen and into the cap (and then create huge messes first when writing because the nib is dripping with ink and second when accidentally turning the cap upside down...). This has happened to me with two different pens.

The first pen is relatively new so this might be a problem with the pen rather than the ink, but the second pen is old and this had not happened to me before.

Weird, I didn't know something like that could happen. :/

I'll have to find something else to mix my Gris Nuage with, I really think it's too light used on its own.

Not paying good attention, left a vial of Dragon's Napalm open and put 2cc of Skrip b/bl in it. Sediment appeared in about 5 minutes. The longer it sits the more sediment appears. I won't put it in a pen, but I will leave it in a vial and see what happens.

Visconti Black

Noodler's White of the Whale

A one to one mix makes a reasonable gray, but it flushed straight out of the cartridge and into the cap. One could call it a "free flowing" ink mix.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
