So. Do You Have Any Esties With "mackeral Sky" On Them?

First it was me with "Streaker" Esties and then someone else (Tom Heath?) started with Snakeskin patterning, then I saw this and had to big time chuckle.

In this months vintage pen tray sale, Richard Binder has a couple Esties, a LJ and a J, both of which he says have "Mackeral Sky" patterning. :clap1: :notworthy1: I Love It! That's at least as good as Snakeskin I have to say.

So wait, a fish in the sky using a fountain pen? Sounds like a dream I had the other night! :roflmho:

It made me think of a t-shirt with Mackeral Sky on it with a stream scene and a Copper Estie J jumping out of the water.

Yeah, I have it my grey J as well!

I called it "reptile" pattern in the past!

(Even Estie Pens that I sold!)

"Mackeral Sky" -That's funny!! :)

Actually, you'd have to use mackereloid. Rare cousin of celluloid, y'know.

One day, while looking at an Estie that was headed for our monthly tray, Jim and I coined the term for this context. He mentioned the phrase, and it immediately rang true -- we're both familiar with cloud formations, and there we were. We looked at images, and by golly, "mackerel sky" is by far the most recognizably descriptive term for the patterning.

ETA: We've noticed mackerel sky patterning on every color of Estie J but one. We're still looking for a black mackerel sky. :P

Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly

A girl with the mackerel sky.

Kaleidoscopically speaking, that is, right?

Which of course, as everyone knows, preceded the final selection in that series, "Mackerel Sky". You know how it goes, "Bye bye Miss Mackerel Sky, drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry..."

OBTW, Franklin was wrong. Gaius Iulius Caesar got it right: FERE LIBENTER HOMINES ID QVOD VOLVNT CREDVNT -- "As a general rule, men willingly believe that which they want." If you need an example, I can cite one, but it's somewhat political.

There is little that isn't political! In any event, my use of the Franklin quote is not for it's unassailable correctness, but my constant hope that it could be.

I keep mine next to the black streaker set with the toaster top jewel I got from Bruce before he realized what he had.

Ah, but are there any "...dead mackerel by moonlight . . ."

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
